Keep in mind that I haven't played much of this game, so not much of my own experience to add to it.

Wrap up:
Starbound begins with the player in a space shuttle, fleeing their homeworld just as it is destroyed by an unknown enemy. With nothing to guide it, the escape pod shoots into space without direction, becoming hopelessly lost in a sea of stars. As luck would have it, the space shuttle touches down on a habitable planet and an adventure begins that takes the player hurtling across the universe. Starbound contains both quests and story driven missions, buried inside its vast sandbox universe. The space shuttle acts as the player's vehicle while exploring the galaxy, containing a teleport pad the player can use to teleport down to planets the shuttle is visiting.

Gameplay:
The planets the player explores are procedurally generated. These planets will have very unique features to them, each one having a different theme. They will have seeds, or coordinates, that are generated with the world. If these coordinates are shared, they can allow a player to visit another player's planet. Each planet is unique, with different types of terrain, procedurally generated foliage, weather, day/night cycles, gravity levels, enemy appearance and behaviour, materials, colour of materials and foliage, and various backdrops. I haven’t played Terraria, but from what I’ve seen of it, the games seem quite similar in the way that they are played.

My impression:
So far, I’m really liking it. It doesn’t fall too far from the tree in terms of those Minecraft and Terraria like games, but it isn’t trying to. Starbound isn’t trying to be radically new or ingenius, it’s trying to be a big upgrade. Much more variety, interesting plannet ideas, and much more craftability adds to that simple style of gameplay just that much more.

Currently it’s in open Beta, and they are constantly taking user suggestions on how to improve the game. So if you want in on that process, buy it, join in on the Forums, and help craft the game to your liking. You’re also able to set up servers, so if a bunch of people are playing it, we should organise one to start together.

It’s $15 AUD currently on Steam, so get on it.

Already played this and had a great experience. Although until using ports, and the use of auto ports like Hamachi is better, I don't see myself playing it all that much. After all gameplay in creative games like this I have found to be better with friends.

I've been playing a bit of this, and so far it has a lot of promise. There truly are a ridiculous amount of planets to explore, and each and every one of them is unique. The crafting system is well done, it is very similar to Terraria's, for those who are familiar with it. You mine ores so you can make weapons, armor, and tools, and then use those to access more valuable ores, etc etc. Eventually you fight bosses to gain access to new areas and open up more difficult planets with rarer ore types.

That's the good stuff, the downside is that it is only a beta of the game and it shows, a lot of things feel incomplete, with things as simple as item descriptions missing in a lot of cases. There are massive NPC villages, but nothing to interact with apart from a merchant or two. There are seemingly endless planets, but not much of variety between two planets of the same type. There are a lot of game mechanics that look promising but haven't been properly fleshed out yet. These are all issues that are being worked on, but if you are looking for a complete package right off the bat you may want to wait a while.

>>3 Also there are whole functions such as pets that haven't been added in yet. I suppose it's kind of like how Minecraft was back in Beta; a lot of obvious potential, but a pretty bare game.

Also, massive new update coming out in the next couple of days to all players. Be warned, this is going to completely revamp the combat system, and add in baby monsters, but it will include a character data wipe.

Be prepared.

This game, bro.

It's all like Terraria, but with deeper RPG elements, and a touch of Minecraft, and more updates than Cube World.

This game makes me wet

My only complaint right now: merchants wont buy my shit!

>>9 NPC interaction is not good at this point in time. Most useful NPC action I've found is a chef that can spawn on your ship and sell you food.

Has anybody managed to find many tech blueprints? The only ones I've stumbled across have been Dash and Human Mecha

13 Name: Hatash!HATStoI1IE : 2013-12-17 09:23 ID:IUzDiHVo [Del]

>>12 I stumbled upon the Morphball, Human Mech, Bubble Boost, Camera Man Boost, Pulse Jump, and the Energy Dash.

I have a Bubble Boost chip and a Human Mech Blueprint if anyone is in need of those.

>>12 I found one by chance in my first world after the update. Before that, not a single one

15 Name: Day/Dia : 2013-12-19 11:21 ID:A/mgFOv+ [Del]

I got the Dash and Pulse Jump, and gave my friend the Gravity Ball because needed help since he was on a level 6 planet while underpowered (despite the equip. I gave him).

I found a dagger that does 738 DPS and shoots lightning. I dual wield it with a sword that does like 239 DPS or something

Is the game going to get anymore updates that will wipe your character data? I am hesitant to buy it after hearing that.

26 Name: Sleepology !4a6Vun8zuw : 2014-01-05 22:15 ID:puYAeg02 [Del]

>>25 probably. it is in beta.

There's one more character wipe planned for the game. It's here on their Twitter https://twitter.com/StarboundGame/status/416696077950390272

I really bought it early to support it just because I love indie companies. I want to be able to get attached to my character so I'll spend more time on it after the wipe, I think.

>>27 I'll probably wait until after that to play it.

I recently bought a ton of games anyway so I'll have something to do until then.

Hate to revive an old thread. But I think it's preferred that I do this rather than start a new one. Forum etiquette is confusing <_<. Anyway I have a 12 slot server for Starbound. Wanted to know if anyone was interested in playing on it. As none of my RL buds seem to be down for it.

>>29 As long as thread is still relevant then it's never considered too old.

And I might be down for that. I am in Australia doe, so would probably be strange.
