A friend of mine informs me that it was made with children in mind, because the 3D option in itself was stopping parents from buying the console. It was less about removing a feature and more about disallowing it, for children - otherwise, it's cheaper and less convenient, but there will be some who would buy it anyway.
Basically it's to cover the rest of their bases: i.e. the market of consumers that didn't buy the 3DS because of the 3D. But other than that it's really nothing special.

Eh, it's not good, but I don't think it deserves the harsh criticism it gets. Has anyone else noticed that Nintendo systems are getting really redundant? 5 iterations of the DS, and they all do pretty much the same stuff. I love Nintendo, but they need to step up their game if they want to continue their success.

Well I heard this guys opinion on it on youtube and it changed my opinion. This is what I took from it.
Basically you know how when u had your DS for a while and it would wobble after a a bit? This is a reason and also because of the kids as one guy already said. You can tell your 9 year with not-fully-developed eyes to not use the 3D on the 3DS but who says theyll listen? We need something that will appeal to the parents and will be ssafe for the kids...

I suppose it's not a terrible idea, I can understand the child friendly aspect and it isn't a bad idea for those who can't afford the 3DS. I guess it's also a good way for Nintendo to keep their profits up

I wouldn't buy it, but it is kind of a smart move. I don't know how much they had to spend to make/market/release this thing, but it seems like it would get some profits anyway.

They've already said this was marketed towards children of ages 7 and under. And think of it this way, if you were a person living in poverty and couldnt exactly afford the 3DS this would be a great alternative for it. The design of it is still pretty stupid though.
