The legend of Zelda majoras mask came after Ocorina of Time, Launching in 2000. It has the same basics of OOT, same dungeon exploration, same unique vibes, everything, but is also much darker in its story. A new mechanic would be the masks, with each mask holding some power, such as the Deku/Zora/Goron masks, which allow you to become any of those races.
It takes place after OOT, when Link leaves Hyrule to look for a friend. As he is going through the forest, he encounters the Skull Kid, who ends up leading him through a mad race. In the end, Link falls into a trap and is turned into a deku scrub. On top of that, the moon will destroy the world in three days time!
Thus, it is up to the Hero of Time to heal himself, defeat the evils of the land of Termina, and bring the four giants to help save the world, all in a meager 72 hours .
The game, again, is basically a sequel to OOT, having the same controls and mechanics. However, the Kingdom of Hyrule is now replaced with it's sister land of Termina, a diverse land of Lagoons to the east, Swamps to the south, a desert canyon to the west, and snowy mountains to the north. In the middle is the bustling city of Clocktown.
The game, IMO, is also pretty dark. Sure, there are a lot of messages about friendship, perseverance, and love, but it's usually shrouded in despair or fear. The moon falling, the people panicking, the fighting. Hell, think of the ranch! Or the music house!
The music is also very good, as in many LoZ games (personal favorite is the Astral Observatory), and each music piece fits well with it's area or person. The art style is still very nice after twelve years, and the voice acting/effects (or lack thereof) is just...fun.
So, In my opinion, Majoras Mask is a great game. I may not be able to effectively explain it, but I hope this little post can shed some light. For anyone interested, the game can be played on Both N64 and Gamecube. I've heard there is a 3DS version, but from what I've seen, I think the original better captures the darkness. If you don't have any of these, well, there's always Project 64.
Also, it was awesome making December 21st the unofficial "Majoras Mask Apocalypse Joke Day".
Toast, peeps.

Majora's mask was, and still is my favorite LoZ game of all time. The dark storyline was perfect, minus a few little problems, but i think the selling part about the game is that the player can interpret the story their own way. A good example of this is the video by GameTheory about Link being "dead" throughout the story of MM, which is something that is totally plausible and could be true.

The 3DS remake is okay, I'm so used to playing the N64 version so with the new changes it's almost an entirely new game. I've beaten the first boss and his combat style is entirely different, and there are some weird small changes, like moving the location of the bank teller. It's good but I definitely have some nostalgia for the original.
