Used Gaming and what the future holds for it (22)

I'm sure that everyone here has noticed the latest trend in gaming. Used games are getting screwed over. The implementation of the "online pass system" for independent publishers such as Ubisoft and EA as well as things such as the PSN has made it nearly impossible for people to buy a used game, trade games with friends, rent games, or just play the same game as their family members with different accounts and still be able to enjoy the games to their full extent. To me this is really just an act of greed, but one that i have been able to tolerate to an extent.

The reason that I have created this thread is due to the fact that there have been many unsettling rumors that with the next cycle of consoles, used gaming is going to be hit even harder, with consoles like the PS4 which will allegedly limit used games and the Xbox 720 which will allegedly reject used games entirely. I'm sure I don't need to explain how financially crippling this would be on every party involved (except the publishers, or course), so I pose this question: What do you think is going to happen to the future of used gaming? will these companies be allowed to limit used games so drastically or do you think they will actually do a double take and stop this trend of limiting used gaming in order to simply make more money?

If they do manage to allow zero used games, I might give up on buying new games entirely. Might as well play for the nostalgia on my old n64, maybe even bring out my gamecube again.

Point is, a lot of users will be upset if this happens. The smart idea would be to get over it, and allow used games to continue. If it does pass, however, it's likely that torrenting games will see a huge increase in demand.

Unfortunately it seems as if used gaming is a dying market. It sucks because used games are not only lower in price, but they're infinitely more accessible when you're short on cash like me. It also means that in order to experience a game you have to pay out the ass, which is only going to give those who pirate games more and more power. With all the stuff happening to used gaming it's only going to get a lot of gamers mad at the publishers, and for a good reason.

>>6 this is exactly one of the reasons they try to make used games inferior, because they know that there will always be those who prefer or can only afford used over new. the thing is that the people who buy used games are never going to buy new games regardless of their options. they may make a few extra hundred or so dollars off of it, but realistically, i do not see their income skyrocketing from this. In reality, all they are going to do is drive every other game related business to the ground, and the value of their products will depreciate REALLY quickly due to the fact that their games will be nearly unusable.

>>7 You have a really good point there. One thing that I do have to say is that if I ever do have the money for a newer game, I plan on buying the new game. To quote Extra Credits, we are the consumer, and currency is our weapon. If people make something good, give those guys some money.

This would hit used game stores hella hard. And wouldn't alot of people just stick with older gen consoles then?

Actually, the used games market will suffer a huge blow even if companies don't take measures against it, as developers are embracing the distribution of games through digital downloads, a medium which is, as far as I know, completely devoid of second-hand game transactions. Even if XBLA, PSN, WiiWare, DSiWare and the 3DS eShop aren't as popular as physical game distribution, the success of platforms like Steam and iOS are an indication that in the future, we may be unable to buy games through traditional means. In fact, the indie console Ouya (which runs a modified Android, if I recall correctly) only allows games to be distributed digitally! (Although it also makes it mandatory for games to be at least partially free (you need to release a free demo with your game, or make a large part of the game playable for free with paid DLC unlocking extra content, or even making your entire game free))

I love the used game market. It's a great way to play classics that I missed while they were hot and would otherwise never be able to play due to them going out of the market. It also helps my old consoles' library to grow, even after the fall of the consoles themselves!

>>11 yeah. I guess people would be mad at first but they would eventually cave in and buy one. No one wants to play old games forever.

Fucking Greedy companies >:(. I never trade in my games and buy new if I can (gamestop LOVES selling me broken games), but theres not always a new copy of every game out there.

>>12 i understand that digital downloads will hurt used gaming, but typically digital downloads are the same price as new games(for whatever reason), so used games may still be the better option. Also, wouldn't taking measures AGAINST used gaming be the bullet to the head that finally kills used gaming rather than the help it needs against the digital downloads?

1. Buy a gaming PC.
2. Steam sales
3. ????
4. Profit. PC gaming master race.

Half sarcastic. That's what I did and I'm happy. I only ever really play my PS3 when Kumo wants to play Dark Souls or Battlefield.

ಠ_ಠ

PC will only be the master race until valve comes out with a system.

Then it will be the Valve master race

Does pc support 3d gaming?

>>20 Not sure. To be honest, I do not think so. but is it worth paying hundreds of dollars extra just to be able to play a game at all in order to satisfy your 3d fixation?
