Roles as in Healears, rangers, rogue's, ect. I am, the Tank! The Tank in the group takes most of the damage and makes the enemies focus on specifically the Tank so the others won't die. The Tank can handle all the damage because the Tank wears only heavy, defensive armor, usually using the strongest and slowest weapon it can get it's hands on.

if I can I always go with the ranged DPS. Like an archer or ranger. Its the cowards way to get easy kills and not have to worry about getting stabbed :3 though that damn rouge better not take my loot!

~I try for all classes at least once. In a group I do well at being the tank or just DPS, Im a horrid healer but i do it anyways to get better.

My preference is a ranger-type class striker. (DPS is not a role, it's a statistic. Striker is a role. Saying "we need a DPS" is like saying "we need an armor rating")

>>10 Depending on the game yes, DPS is a role. When advertising for party members in one of my games it's not uncommon for people to ask for Melee DPS (Thief/Martial Artist) or Magic DPS (Mage/Illusionist/Warlock).
As for what I usually play, I go for combat medics whenever possible. I like the ability to solo as a cleric. When I'm not clericing I'm usually going for ranged characters or thieves.

I try healers and buffing, but it's really not me. I like being a ranged type. Be it magic or arrows or guns; anything high powered and far ranged captivates my heart.
