So, I sort of mentioned the fact that they have announced this title in the Skyrim thread. GI has just recently released their monthly magazine in which they published details stemming form an interview with Zenimax Online, the studio creating the game.

What many people have been wondering, and the question which has been guiding the development team throughout the creation of this title, is "How can this title become a good MMO, but still be able incorporate what everyone loves from the single player experience from the earlier games?"

While it is obvious that this would be quite the challenge, early details released about the game mechanics and play style seem to have, at least in theory, done just that.

The game takes place 1,000 years before the event of Skyrim. Cyrodil and the Imperials are reaching an end to their power, and the Empire has no definite ruler. In order to rectify this, members of the Tharn family (the descendants of the main antagonist from the first game) have thrown their lot in with Mannimarco (the main antagonist from the second elder scrolls game as well as Oblivion's mages guild quests), who plans to betray the imperials and has struck a deal with Molag Bal, the Daedric Prince of domination and enslavemnent. Though the other nine races of Tamriel have always been at each other's throats, they have recognized the need for security, and as such have created 3 separate alliances, each containing three of the races. These factions include the Ebonheart Pact (Nords, Dark Elves, and Argonians), the Aldmeri Dominion (High Elves, Wood Elves, and Khajiit), and the Daggerfall Covenant (Redguards, Bretons, and Orcs). These are the nine playable races, so those (including myself) who were looking forward to playing as their normal Imperial characters will be sort of dissapointed. These three factions will battle in Cyrodil (the designated PvP area) for control of the Imperial city. The more terrirtory controlled by the faction, the cloder they will be to controlling the imperial city, which has been beset by Daedra. Once this goal has been accomplished, the top player from the winning faction will be crowned Emperor of Tamriel (there is no voting for the emperor, but there is some sort of unannounced system that will take into account every player's contributions to the war, and the one with the most contributions will assume the role). This can swiftly change, however, as just as in real war, the other two factions won't simply quit and call it good. This promises an ever-shifting PvP experience.

In terms of gameplay mechanics, it has been confimed that the game will be played in a constant 3rd person view with hotkeys allowing you to select your powers and skills, but it has been said that the development team will stay as true to the leveling system form the previous games as possible (the Zenimax Online division team has been said to have a good relation with Bethesda, so they have been working together to ensure that many of the aspects are accessible both to MMO players and hardcore Elder Scrolls fans.) there will still be the use of "light" and "heavy" attacks that will vary from weapon to weapon, and one of the most intuitive new appplications to an MMO game that hails directly from the other Elder Scrolls games is the use of the Stamina bar. The Stamina bar promises to be a game changer in multiple aspects of the game. it will be used for sprinting, maintaining blocks, certain attacks, and can help Warriors thwart the spells and arrows of mages and archers that would have decimated them in other MMOs.

On the topic of straying away from traditional MMO mechanics, Zenimax looks to oust the "Holy Trinity" of MMO's, the relationship between tanks, healers, and damage dealers. The developers stated that every player has a sort of responsibility for themselves, and the skills are distributed to make it so that the game play style seems more natural, some classes may stray towards one of these roles more than others, but the style is created to be balanced. Along with this change naturally comes the abolition of the "aggro" system that most MMOs are familiar with. The AI has been (allegedly) adjusted so that in most cases monsters not only attack those who are closer to them or doing the most damage to them, but the one who poses the largest threat to them losing the battle.

Another interesting dynamic in the game is the fact that most of the class' skills are made to play upon each other. A mage can call down a firestorm and have a fighter come in and use a whirlwind attack to force fireballs out into every direction, or a thief can throw down an oil slick to slow down enemies, then have another allied player catch the oil slick on fire and deal massive damage to those who are caught in it. the catch is the unfortunately (or thankfully, depending on how you view it) this is restricted to allied players only, one can not see an enemy oil slick or firestorm and turn their opponent's attacks against them.

Players also have the freedom that every player of the Elder Scrolls games revel in. A player can join guilds, participate in competitions, complete the main story quest, complete hundreds of side quests, and even explore un-mapped caves and ruins that may not have quests related to them, but may contain some good loot.

Other notable inclusions of aspects from the Elder Scrolls games include the use of Deadric Princes in side quests (unfortunately, you can not earn their artifacts, as thousands of people running around with items there are supposedly only supposed to be one of goes against the lore), Vampires and Werewolves (again, this addition has been changed from the games, as a vampire/werewolf player changes the dynamics of PvP and other aspects of the games), the inclusion of Mundus stones (used to choose perks from the birthsigns of the game), the inclusion of many familiar and famous town form all Proivineces of Tamriel (such as Windhelm,Gnisis, Etc...), fast traveling via wayshrines that double as respawn points (you have to teleport to wayshrines you've visited, you can't just pull up your map in any random place and go anywhere.), mounts (flying mounts go against the lore, so don't expect them in the game), the full character voice acting that has players have come to expect fomr the Elder Scrolls Series, and stealth (it has not yet been announced exactly how this will work). Things that have not been included that are notable aspects form the other elder scrolls games are dragons (again, against the lore), player houses (it'd be too complicated to have a player housing system that makes sense with the dynamics of the game), and NPC romances/marriage ("The idea of an MMO is to form relationships with other players" so NPC romance will not be included, but this does not mean that they will not implement a player relationship dynamic).

Personally, i feel like this title has some promise to it. I am sure some ES fans and some MMO veterans will have issues with certain aspects of the game, but i feel like it will most likely deliver a new experience that most MMO players and ES fans have not really seen before. At the same time, i feel like there is definitely a chance that this could end up failing miserably, and at this time i do not know if payig a monthly subscription (as it will most likely have, it IS an MMO after all) would be worth it.

There has been a large outcry for Multiplayer aspect on the Elder Scrolls series, but is an MMO aiming too high? only time will tell, but i would love to hear your thoughts on the matter.

My guess is its going to have the same sort of elements, but skill building is going to be much more limited in the sense that you cant be across the board, you have to choose from a certain area. If so, theres going to be rouge classes everywhere...
N no, I did not read the whole thread.

Alright, after reading this, Im excited. Sounds pretty fuckin amazing if done correctly.

While I am hopeful that this game should succeed, I can't help but feel a little apprehensive towards the possible outcome, as far as the finished product is concerned.

While everything looks and sounds absolutely amazing, a game that can be this ground breaking could end up suffering from "Nintendo Syndrome", where even though it's new, it just misses the mark of fully functional.

Ah, who am I kidding? I don't really give a damn! TES:O, baby! Can't wait!

>>6 I sort of feel the same way. I feel like there is a lot of potential to this title, and that if it is done right (and they seem to be on the right track so far) then it could be one of the best MMO's out there. >>4 lol, yeah. they said they'd mix it up, keep things fair. something they said was that a player can have up to like 20 mastered skills, so if they made every single one a powerhouse just because someone wants to specialize in one area, then the dynamics of the game would be way off. they said that rather then being an all-powerful master skill, they'd make it so that mastering the skill would lead to something cool that people still want to use. They just say that you should not expect that skill alone to turn the tide of battle.

One of my biggest fears is that they'll "balance" classes like WoW, where they just rotate which class is OP for the most current patch.

9 Name: Kumo!NC09qbtR1Q : 2012-05-05 20:01 ID:9177hRkI [Del]

>>8 given the fact that they really want to avoid any sort of OP class (the warrior seems a bit close to OP with the blocking ability, imo, but i'm sure they'll fix that), i don't think it will be a patch by patch sort of thing

>>9 Im sure Blizzard doesn't want OP classes, but they really seem to suck at balancing stuff out.

This made me sad... I thought it was going to be awesome. then i read this. Kotaku - TESOnline and after reading that i saw the game informer mag they mentioned, and well, it's going to be pretty much Skyrim with WoW engine. sad day for Bethesda.

I'll try it. If it doesn't impress, then I won't buy it/take it back. But who knows, it might really impress.

Sounds like a cross between WoW and Guild Wars 2 from what i can grasp.. which to me is not a bad thing. If they execute this well i will be playing this.

16 Name: Kumo!NC09qbtR1Q : 2012-05-06 20:45 ID:9177hRkI [Del]

>>12 this article seems to be sort of biased. think of it logically, the real time combat would be way too difficult to maintain for every single person. there are some games, like Vindictus, that do it well, but they aren't looking to support 100v100 battles, it's too massive of a game to be able to do it that way. playing the game online, there's going to always be hotkeys to activate skills, how else would you do it? i feel like there ARE some points to be made and there are things mentioned within the article that will definitely turn some people off of the game, but i feel like there will still be a chance for it to shine.

Also, more of a technical thing, Bethesda is NOT making the game, but they are trying to work with the developers to try to mix the MMO and ES elements in a way that makes sense.

17 Name: Crisis !JjfHYEcdHQ : 2012-05-06 23:20 ID:jfZIey0K [Del]

>>16 No. Real time combat in an MMO is possible. I played one where the entire game was based on real time PvP. It was called Fantasy Earth Zero. It had 6 countries to choose from, and players fought over territory for their country.

18 Name: Kumo !NC09qbtR1Q : 2012-05-07 00:15 ID:9177hRkI [Del]

>>17 like i said, it's not impossible, but with the scale of it...i think it would be difficult and might create some lag issues. hell, i run into issues with games like demon's/dark souls, and that's a 4 person maximum game.

19 Name: Kumo !NC09qbtR1Q : 2012-05-07 00:16 ID:9177hRkI [Del]

not to mention actual ES games...

20 Name: Crisis !JjfHYEcdHQ : 2012-05-07 01:02 ID:jfZIey0K [Del]

like I said, the entire focus of the game was real time PvP. It was handling hundreds of scirmishes per battle, and multiple full scale battles all at once. We never saw too much lag. It can be done, but tey'd just have to put some work into it.

21 Name: Kumo !NC09qbtR1Q : 2012-05-07 09:04 ID:2W2s3DhZ [Del]

>>20 yeah, but it lagged all to fuck for me at times personally, and there have been thousands of horrible lag stories that have been told of. not only that, but you never had hundreds of people on the screen at the same time, the game still had to load areas slowly outside, it just always happened beyond your view. also, loading an AI interface would be easy and make the game run smoother than registering hundreds of unpredictable commands and having things not have some issues. Again, it's not IMPOSSIBLE, it would just be really fucking tough to be able to pull off.

Maybe that's not enough to say that the exclusion real time combat is a bearable sacrifice. I still expect the game to be fun enough to play regardless. hopefully this will not be a venture gone horribly wrong. Also, maybe with ES6 we'll see some actual multiplayer, not just the MMO

22 Name: Crisis !JjfHYEcdHQ : 2012-05-07 13:00 ID:jfZIey0K [Del]

>>21 Really? I never had any lag worth raging about. But totally off topic, you played FEZ?

23 Name: Kumo !NC09qbtR1Q : 2012-05-07 23:25 ID:9177hRkI [Del]

>>22 lag wasn't too bad for the most part, but when it DID happen, it would always freeze me. this was before the patch came out though, now any lag is minimal.

No, i can not say i have.

The best thing to do is have requirements for the gaming PC and Internet connection. Bitching servers will be needed.

I'd set the minimum PC requirements to:

3.0Ghz CPU
2GB RAM
2GB total Graphics Card cache

The Internet connection should be broadband.

The servers should be:

2.6-3.0Ghz CPU (16-20MB cache) or Dual 2.0Ghz CPUs with 16MB cache (total of 32MB)
24-32GB RAM
Dual/Quad Ethernet sockets
Cat. 7 Ethernet cables

That should do the trick for the lag problem. I doubt anyone will listen.

>>24 Isn' that mroe of a person to person system requirement? you can't guarantee that EVERYONE playing the MMO will meet those requirements.

also, i'm not much of a technical person, i can grasp overarching issues, but details go right over my head.

27 Name: King Dude !zXqFpoplY6 : 2012-05-08 23:18 ID:yVrEDXZl [Del]

>>26 They only thing else that might help is to have an option to lower the graphics quality. Other than that there's not much else.

In my honest opinion, if people think they can run newer games on anything less that 3.0Ghz is a moron. I'm not making this requirement out of the coldness of my heart, because I know damn well what the prices are on processors. A 3.0Ghz CPU will run at about $130, depending on the brand (AMD being cheaper than Intel). $130 is about 2 Xbox 360 games, so if you can endure the pain of waiting to get a new game, it is worth it. The one thing you do not want to slouch on is the CPU.

And for your reference Hz (Hertz), Mhz (Megahertz), and Ghz (Gigahertz) are frequencies. Think of speed when you think of a Hz unit, Hz being the slowest and Ghz being the fastest.

The properties of a CPU that you need to pay attention to is:

Cores
Processing Frequency (speed)
Cache

Cores are just individual "brains" that generally speed up the CPU (although not always) and more importantly increase the reliability of the CPU.

The cache is essentially storage so the CPU remembers what it's suppose to be doing at the moment, kind of like it's own RAM. Most newer processors range from 4MB to 8MB, and occasionally (especially with server CPUs) 16MB to 20MB.

Here's a link for a decent processor.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819106009

It's a 4.2Ghz x4 (virtual) socket AM3+ with a 4MB L2 cache and a 8MB L3 cache. It's actually better (and cheaper) than my original estimate.

If you still can't afford it, go play Minecraft.

You know what, I'll just build your computer for you guys. All you have to do is pay for it and put it together, which you can probably find someone to put it together for you so all you really need to do is pay for it.

Assuming you have to start out with scratch, I'll post the cheapest gaming PC that can handle the high quality games.

>>32 I suppose. but, after playing skyrim. i don't like the idea of having the camera stuck in 3rd person and my skills on a hotbar with cool downs out the ass. even normal attacks is going to be auto attacks with delay timers. it takes away from how the original was. personally i think people will play it for a little while. cause it's skyrim. but i don't think it will be big. also the main reason why everyone uses the WoW scheme for controls is to try to appeal to the WoW players. making it easier for them to go from WoW to another game. but what they don't realize. is that if they made skyrim online more like skyrim and less like wow. you'd appeal to all the people that don't like the wow scheme.

all in all though. I think it will be a hit, just because it's skyrim. there were so many story lines in the morrowind games that i thought could have been bigger then they were. i guess this way they can be. just really think they shouldn't have taken away the live action part.

>>34 It's the elder scrolls not skyyyyyyrimmmmmmm (just kidding, i'm not really THAT guy, but i will admit, it did sort of annoy me)
The thing is that they are trying to appeal to people that play games like WoW AND the ES games, so i feel like there will most likely be more interactions and other interfaces that are added to the game to make it appeal to ES fans. It may not be a total success, and it will surely be popular for the first few months at least, but i feel like we will not know exactly how good it will be until it comes out. there are so many ways that an ES MMO works on paper, and so many ways that it does not. we'll just have to put faith in the dev team. If they say they've got this, i think we should trust them until it is proven that they do not have this.

38 Name: DangerOtter !nI5ayVXEKo : 2012-05-10 16:40 ID:SFWEDtA+ [Del]

>>34 Umm... Not really. Have you ever played an MMO with a different control scheme? I have, and it sucked ass trying to switch skills in time. The hotkey function is much more simple, but most of all, it's practical which is why so many use it. In addition, since so many MMo's use it, it's already familiar for people new to the game.

Hey wait a second. Doesn't Blizzard have the rights to the WoW engine? This game will be developed by Bethesda, the same creator of Fallout 3. Unless Blizzard has some chicken shit relation to Bethesda or Obsidian Entertainment, it shouldn't be possible.

Now that being said, why in god's ass would they rebuild from scratch a look-a-like WoW engine to use, when they can very well build off their current engine and add a few key features to it?

I'm just concerned that it'll be another trend game like SWTOR. Good at first impression, yet doesn't last long for many. Skyrim gave me that feeling, so I hope to see better things out of this.

SWTOR was good, but still. the live action concept would have been better. which is why I think taking a series like the elder scrolls and making it more turn based, is kinda a slap in the face. but to each his/her own. it may turn out to be a good game. but in my opinion here. they could have keep the live action and had an awesome game. I mean, wouldn't y'all like to see a game where fights are fun? where you have to dodge and attack, or even hit a botton to block at the right time. rather then just have a "block" chance? don't know about y'all, but i've had moments in other mmo's where i challenged something i thought maybe i had a chance. half way through the fight i was like, "screw this" and ran. but, even though i'm no where near the thing i hit it can still "melee" attack me from miles away. i'm just saying, all in all. they should have done without the WoW style controls and went for something more true to their games. Or if they wanted to have the third person view and change things up, but keep it live action style. they could have went with something like vindictus. but anyways, that's my opinion. it may turn out to be a somewhat good game. but i don't think it will stick around long.

So here are a few things confirmed by devs:
- There will be perks allowing you to be a werewolf or vampire
- There is a class system
- The class system will not limit any type or armor or weapon you can use. (So I imagine it will be similar to Oblivion in that your class determines which skills get a small boost at the start)

53 Name: Crisis !JjfHYEcdHQ : 2013-01-23 04:05 ID:3RDeIXpI [Del]

Just heard this from an alpha tester on Youtube:

- You fill out a questionnaire, and it will put you with like-minded people. This means people who enjoy raids, PvP, PvE, casuals, etc. and a people who want to roleplay are typically playing with each other respectively.

- You have 5 hot-keys for skills, and number 6 for an ultimate. There aren't cooldowns, just the time it takes to perform a skill, and of course the requirement for stamina/magicka.

- PvP is entirely realistic. You can use a trebuchet to destroy the wall of a fort so that your team may enter, but when you capture that fort, you have to rebuild that wall. Structures do not repair themselves automatically, forcing players to make conscious decisions about how to conquer territory in a way that the consequences are acceptable. Players may also attack enemy caravans, capture surrounding farms to starve out opposing players in forts, coordinate ambushes, etc.

- Mobs make decisions based on all factors, including how many there are, what types of monsters are in the mob, the monsters' abilities, the likely success rate of attacks, combinable strategies, etc. For example, one enemy may does you in oil, while another lights you on fire. Mobs think to fight you.

- Apparently the world is fucking gorgeous as well

Either that or this 'Megaserver' they figured out also has a way to go completely cross-platform.

106 Name: HAM (iPod) : 2013-06-11 10:49 ID:75nDHMRS [Del]

Personally this sounds like the game is going to be completely PVP based instead of the normal ES games which are based around exploring, discovering, and doing quests. Since I'm not a fan of PVP on any online game, this is kind of disappointing.
I think they could have taken a rout like MineCraft and made it so people make servers on a game that you play with friends instead of thousands of random people.

Oh well, in the end I'm still buying it just because I love ES xD

Not many people are excited for it but I personally reckon it will be one of the biggest MMO breakthrough since WOW

>>119 I do have a couple of members, one being Kumo in a guild I'm forming in preparation for the games release. My goal is to have the guild name across the three release platforms of PS4, xBox One, and PC. It can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/616132891736434/

We're an Ebonheart Pact guild, on the side opposing Molag Bal, with myself, an Argonian, as the admin. I'm officially inviting anyone else aligned with Tamriel, and the Ebonheart Pact to join us. We can use all sorts of skillsets and talents.

We've decided to go with a name some of you might recognize: Redwall.

I'd prefer if all members of the guild add each other and myself on Facebook, if they have one. Here's mine: (https://www.facebook.com/umbraserpens) This encourages people to communicate, and plan things like dungeons or form teams for PVP on any given day. I have some leveling strategies that I'd like to discuss as well, with new guild members.

I'm hoping to have 100 members at least, by release date. I hope to have a guildmaster for each platform, so that the whole guild is more easily organized and monitored. I'll be taking on that role for the PS4 group.

any of you know where I can find lockpicks? none of the shops in the first town seemed to have any even though there was quite a few locked chests

G-guys...my beta was not accepted.
They told me no way and called me a faggot.
Is the game sick?

163 Name: Xephlrek!9RNNck.4fo : 2013-11-23 12:01 ID:cOIRj64I [Del]

The first town doesn't have a shop? Not from what I heard.
I only picked up a few while leaving oblivion.
Though, I'm currently searching for some more.

167 Name: Miyamato : 2013-11-24 19:09 ID:SAeUME8L [Del]

The robo voices are filling me XD
The questing feels really Elder Scrolls-like.
Progressing is really slow and the skills dont have branching paths like in skyrim, they just level up.
Super buggy too.
Melee and Bow combat feel either really under powered or repetitive. Magic is kinda.

This beta was the most magnificent thing I've ever played.

Over 24 hours of me playing through Saturday morning and night only to get super tired lighting fires, chopping wood, and eating delicious venison burgers. Best 40 hours I ever spent consecutively.

172 Name: Xephlrek!9RNNck.4fo : 2013-11-26 07:36 ID:cOIRj64I [Del]

We should form a guild before release.

>>172 I'm game to join.

Why was everything so expensive at the shops? I did like 30jobs, died 6 times, and then collected a few bucks from corpses and STILL barely had enough to repaur all my stuff and grab an incredibly fragile lockpick.

Someone here running Windows 8.1 with multiple monitors?
I got a question for you: can you actually play the game? I get a message with "not enough ram" every 5 minutes.
I have 16GB of ram installed (memchecked!). And they are _not_ full while running the game (monitored them).
So sad... TESO seems kinda cool to play

I highly doubt the game is intentionally lying to you. Send a ticket to them, including your os and other useful information in it. It could be your gpu cant handle playing the game n running other shit due to the pressure of multiple screens.

I think ESO will do rather well when it gets released.
It's different from WoW, rather than just a clone.
Those games all feel kind of disconnected, you're not involved with the gameplay.
With ESO you are actually involved with the character. It's nice.

I've been playing the beta. It is both 3rd and 1st person view. Your choice. I can't legally give you screens or anything but yeah, I really anna get it except for the fact that it has a subscription fee of $14.99 USD per month. If i paid 80 bucks for the imperial special edition, why am I paying 15 bucks a month to play my game?

Game's fine, money is stupid. it is very much Skyrim online without the shouty bits.

Early access starts in four hours.

The creators said that they did the want to make a game that everybody could play. They made it a relatively expensive subscription model because they want a quality game that can release major DLC monthly. I have no problem with that.

My Breton battle-mage in the Aldemeri dominion.

Sorcerer class, makes use of some rather heavy raiments, likes some good ol' fashioned electricity, alternates between a staff set to turn your balls into cinder and a sword big enough to cut the fruit from James and the Giant Peace.

This game needs to be more of a thing.
