I also recommend the Metroid franchise, assuming you can get into it. Start with Zero Mission on the GBA, which is a remake of the first Metroid game, only so much better that you may as well act like the NES game doesn't exist, then I'd advise either Fusion, Prime, or Super Metroid. Don't be too turned off by Prime's First Person approach either, as it's still more about exploring than shooting.
Oh, and you may or may not want to skip Metroid Prime 2 when you get to it... Skip because the backtracking gets really old really fast (Odd considering Metroid is about 60% backtracking, but Prime 2 makes this suck...), or don't because it's still Metroid Prime, just the weakest of the Prime games.
