So I recently read the new Guinness Book of World Records: Gaming Edition, and according to them, the honor of "Best Game Ending of ALL TIME belongs to Call of Duty: Black Ops

This is inexcusable bullshit that makes me so pissed off that it's not even funny. Hence the purpose of this thread. I would like to know (WITHOUT ANY SPOILERS if possible, and please let us know BEFORE you inevitably post them) what YOU think deserves the honor of being considered the best video game ending of all time.

In my own opinion, i think that this honor defintely belongs to either MGS4 (which only made #8 on the Guinness list) or MGS3 (which made it somewhere between 20-35, i forget.)

>>2 I would have a hard time saying that the ending for Metal Gear Solid 4 is the best ever the fight with Liquid Ocelot is badass, but then the after credits speech by Big Boss goes on for FOREVER

>>3 true. but i still thought the way everything was wrapped up was interesting/emotional/just great overall.

This whole game literally brought me on the verge of tears in the way things went down near the end. I was a bit dissapointed when the various details of the big boss scene (namely snake) didnt turn out exactly the way you thought it might, but i was still happy with the end result and it still managed to retain that feeling of bitter-sweetness and was quite content with it supposed to be the end of the series, unlike when capcom claimed RE5 was the end...

Then they announced MGS5...

The ending for Okami was pretty good.

The world Ends With You had an Awesome ending!

7 Name: KingZeoX : 2012-02-15 10:13 ID:GXDYJL1A [Del]

There are a million things I could put in that slot, so I'll just list some of them rather than rant...

- Portal 2
- Clannad Visual Novel (Assuming we want to count Visual Novels)
- Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3
- Crisis Core: -Final Fantasy VII-

As for things that just have a better ending than Call of Duty: Black Ops...

- Super Mario Bros.
- Donkey Kong
- School Days' Anime Ending
- The Bad Ending to Clannad's Visual Novel
- Super Mario Bros. 2: The Lost Levels
- The Bad/Sad Ending to Tales of Symphonia 2: Knights of Ratatosk
- Sonic The Hedgehog (2006)
- Sonic Adventure ("All's well that ends well, eh, Sonic?" "THE CITY'S BEEN FUCKING DESTROYED!" -FTA, Hellfirecomms)
- Pong
- Pac-Man
- Tetris

The list goes on...

>>7 lulz. Black ops wasn't THAT bad. my biggest problem with htt article though was that one of the reasons they said it was a great ending was

SPOILER ALERT, DO NOT READ PAST THIS PART IF YOU DO NOT WANT THE END TO BE RUINED FOR YOU, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED AND DO NOT BITCH TO ME IF YOU CONTINUE PAST THIS INTENTIONALLY ELONGATED TEXT WALL!

The possibility that the main guy may have killed JFK and how it played into a current conspiracy theory

END SPOILER! YOU'RE COOL IF YOU READ ON FROM HERE, SO YOU CAN CONTINUE TO LISTEN TO MY RANT WITHOUT FEAR OF SHIT BEING SPOILED FOR YOU

when all of the MGS games play around with conspiracy theories that may not exist, but they are entirely plausible, and therefore the genius of these story writers shows through the effective use of these "theories" and how they end up changing the story and coming together at the end of each game. a bullshit "oh, this MAY have POTENTIALLY happened in ONE AREA of the game" does not constitute automatic "Best ending" status.

9 Name: Feral : 2012-02-15 15:26 ID:NiOMmuUZ [Del]

The best ending? Bastion.

I put that game down and was just smiles up until I finished The Darkness 2. That game brought me down real fast.

Best ending ever, super mario 64. Do all this work, you only get a cake. And the cake is a lie, so you get nothing. TOTALLY WORTH IT!

>>10 acceptable

12 Name: Frosty : 2012-02-15 20:07 ID:rNsUkGW0 [Del]

I must say that I agree with the guiness world record book on that one. Just the fact that all that stuff that went down was all in your head and the end twist was so perfect. Now I'm not a COD fag or anything but to say that the ending sucked must mean that you are a COD hater and probably didn't play through it. If you take cod out of it, I believe it would have made a great movie. Just an opinion so don't grill my ass about it.

13 Name: Kumo!NC09qbtR1Q : 2012-02-15 21:49 ID:9177hRkI [Del]

>>12 ok, i'm not going to deny that it was a good ending, but aside from the VERY ending. which i do not constitute as enough ground to justify it being name the greatest ending, it was PREDICTABLE. I knew halfway through the game that Mason was bat shit crazy and that he was seeing things. aside form that, i believe that there were much more deserving titles with way crazier plot twists. Again, i'm not taking away from Black Ops, i just do not feel as strongly about it as most people do I guess.

14 Name: Kumo!NC09qbtR1Q : 2012-02-15 21:58 ID:9177hRkI [Del]

>>12 also, just to address the COD hater part, I am FAR from a COD hater, i spent waaay too many hours on almost every mode of ever COD game, especially Black Ops in partcular, but when a game can MOVE you, if it can get you to FEEL something at the end of it, like MGS3 and MGS4 did for me, they deserve nothing but the highest of exaltation. I loved the end of COD 4 and MW2, but that's because they were from almost out of nowhere (MW3 was also enjoyable, a tad predictable at that point, but i enjoyed the surprise way you killed makarov). my problem isn't that i hate COD, but as i stated in >>13, i thought the ending was predictable and slightly forgetable. When i first saw the article, i had to THINK about how Black Ops ended, and even then i didnt even remember after the credits. The very fact that i had to do that means that it really wasn't as great as they say. I realize that it's entirely opinionated, btu oi think that there was no way in hell Black Ops had the best COD ending of all time, let alone the best ending OVERALL of all time.

I'd feel criminal claiming to have just one favorite...So,

1. The Megaman X Series.
2. Legend of Zelda OOT/Majora's Mask (I always thought MM was underated)
3. Skyrim (I know im jumping on the bandwagon here, but it really is THAT good).

16 Name: Kumo!NC09qbtR1Q : 2012-02-15 23:17 ID:9177hRkI [Del]

>>15 MM was pretty overrated. FYI, OOT got #3 on the guinness list. Skyrim was pretty epic at the end of the main quest as well, but it didnt make the list, possibly because it came out pretty late last year, Oblivion was #43 or something though, i thought that was a bit off.

17 Name: Kumo!NC09qbtR1Q : 2012-02-15 23:18 ID:9177hRkI [Del]

>>16 whoops, i mean MM was underrated :/

18 Name: Broken Tangent : 2012-02-16 00:41 ID:gmDueRmJ [Del]

>>16
Honestly I thought the only thing that saved Oblivion was the mods, they added a metric ton of awesome to that game,

As for Skyrim, I'm sure a lot of it's appeal is due to advances in technology and whatnot (the environments are amazing, no doubt). However, I found myself liking the actual storyline of Skyrim far more than I did in Oblivion, not sure why.

Christ, now I suddenly want to go play MM...argh.

19 Name: Broken Tangent : 2012-02-16 00:46 ID:gmDueRmJ [Del]

I personally don't care for Cawadooty, I'm more of a TF2 person honestly...

COD is important for the gaming sphere for certain, however to say any COD game is the greatest of all time...

It makes me wonder if the good people at Guinness did their drug-record segments before doing the gaming bits, sheesh.

OCTOBER 2012!!!!!!!!

>21 implies that games in a series don't end until the final game in the series comes out
>Guinness Book of Records example from the first post picks a game in the middle of a series
>Implying that I haven't finished Assasins Creed 1, 2, and Brotherhood, alongside Mass Effect 1 and 2

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that all games have an ending, even if it's a cliffhanger ending or simply setting up for the next game in the series. Hence, I can pull judgement calls regarding endings on any game I've finished. Anyways, maybe I'll post an example here when I've thought it through more.

Black Ops did have a great ending, but I'm not sure if it was the best though. But yeah, it's up there.

1.)Mafia 2, simply because I like awesome cliffhangers.

2.)Fallout 3 - "Lone Wanderer Death" ending.

3.)Dragon Age - "Your love, Morrighan disappears" ending.

4.)Tomb Raider Underworld, it's nice to see more clues as to what is going on with Lara's connections.

I really liked the end of Majoras Mask, it was happy and sad at the same time.
Why does Call of Duty always get called the best thing ever, anyways? It just seems like another generic shooter.

Star Ocean Till the End of Time had one of the best videogame endings. It reminded me of Descartes, who is most famous for the quote, "I think, therefore I am." This ending was pretty mind blowing, but the game is kind of long, since it is on 2 discs for the ps2.
