LOVE THIS GAME~!
i was attempting to beat it, when my brother decided to come and try to help and broke it (i'm stuck in a table with all the lights in the room on, and earlier he had broke the monster). TnT i don't want to go through all of it again.
in my opinion, the game isn't that scary, the loading and menu screens are scarier...

Penumbra, also by the same company, is a vastly scarier and mostly superior game. It's unfortunate that the company's earlier work is as superior as it is, but nonetheless I recommend both Amnesia and Penumbra. Penumbra is definitely the scarier of the two, however.

Oh God, this game is so freaking scary, I screamed and nearly cried every time a monster would come out.. one of the scariest games ever, I recommend it... sometimes my hands ended up shaking and I couldn't open a door or leave the room... almost shit myself several times... great game XD

I don't think Amnesia : The Dark Descent was a scary game.
I do play horror games a lot,and Fatal Frame was quite a lot scarier than this game.

The second game finally came out. They kept their promise about it not being as scary, but it lacked the game play I thought made the first so great. It was different to say the least, and the story was pretty good, but it needs more. Perhaps an update.

AS I understand it, this game actually began as a small side-project under the Chinese Room. It kept getting bigger and bigger until eventually they decided to make it an overarching sequel to the first. Because of the way the Chinese Room influenced it, the game turned out much more like a visual novel than an actual game.
I mean, seriously. The enemies hardly ever came after you and when they did they were still very easy to shake. User interface was removed completely along with insanity. The player doesn't feel highly invested or involved in the story, you just kind of plod along a single path with no point to really get lost or discover things on your own.
In all honesty, as a separate game I think it would've done very well; the story was nice and the atmosphere was adequately bleak. It's just that putting "Amnesia" in front of it tends to ruin the game quite a bit, because you constantly hold the expectations that the last game have built you up to, but they simply aren't the same.
