Anyone else seen the trailer?
and thoughts?

It has potential. I just hope they do GITS justice. If they're gonna do it do it right.

Nope. This movie isn't worth anyone's time or money....

>>3 Care to expand on that?

I wish they would choose Asian stars to play Asian characters. I mean, come on, Scarlet Johansson?

>>5 Well, it's an American movie. Unless it's set in Japan, which I doubt it will be, it makes sense to me that they'd cast mostly American actors. It also seems needlessly restrictive to limit that only to Asian actors.

Apparently Takeshi Kitano's in it, though. That's pretty cool.

>>6 From what I have heard it's going to be bits and bits and pieces from the original Ghost in the shell film and the GITS DVD series, also GITS is set mostly in Japan like 98% of the time.

>>5 or at least some other actors, I mean what the heck is up with the guy playing "batou" :/ they could of grab ron Perlman to play "batou" and would of looked better.

>>7 Sure, but I think they'll probably move it from Japan to the U.S. like they seem to he doing with the Death Note movie.

>>8 If that really is the case that's another nail in the coffin to put fan off, it's likely going to be dumbed down like they always do.

only good thing it has for it is that they are not trying a 100% remake of the original film or a compressed version of the DVD series, which is only of the many reason why Avatar *cough* the last air bender failed.

>>9 I haven't seen any of the original Ghost in the Shell movies or animes yet, but it doesn't look to me like the concept or world is so intrinsically tied to Japanese culture that changing that would really affect the story in a bad way. There have been some pretty good American cyberpunk movies in the past, so I wouldn't write it off for that reason.

>>11 The original film had such an impact that the "wachowski brothers" copied many of the scenes from it into the Matrix, also many of the themes from ghost in the shell.

>>12 I don't see what your point is here.

Anyway, thankfully the Wachowski's aren't making this one (I'm not a huge fan of The Matrix). Unfortunately, the dude who is directing GiTS also made Snow White and the Huntsman, so this movie could go either way. I'm hoping it ends up good, though.

>>13 Then I highly suggest you go an watch the ghost in the shell film as it came out first and then watch the GITS anime series. :D

>>11 I think it would be pretty trivial to move it to America. I don't think there were any tightly knit references to Japanese culture that could not be avoided in a remake.

Also, re: casting, Section 9 had some of the least Japanese looking people in the entire series. Togusa probably looks the 'most' Japanese since he was not prosthetic. I think the reality is they could have cast an Asian actress, but they wanted a big name to attract more viewers.

I would also recommend watching the original movie, the sequel Innocence, and GITS: Stand Alone Complex.

I just hope they keep the detail-heavy aspects of the original. There was a lot of technology that was only shown on screen once or twice, in some kind of day-to-day situation, that had a lot of creativity put into it.

so excited for this movie! I really hope it's good. I think it'd be cool if the music from the anime was included.

>>16 The original soundtrack was amazing, I hope there are some references to it at least in the new movie.

>>15 yeah, that's pretty much what I figured.

Also, noted. I've had the original movie on my phone for a while now, I've just been procrastinating in regards to actually watching it. I'll do it eventually, I think I'll most likely love it.

>>18 GitS 2: Innocence was also really well made. I rewatch that one more often than the original even.

I am so watching the film. The philosophical themes in the films and in the anime series are profound!
