Richard Kelly is a bit of a hack but everyone with an angsty teenager phase had a point in their life where they loved Donnie Darko (myself included of course). Kelly is no David Lynch but you can tell that he tries especially with his other film, Southland Tales.
I liked that Donnie Darko has multiple interpretations. You either believe that Donnie is actually manipulating time and space or that every single thing that has happened in the movie all happened in his crazy head, with him just dying on his bed in the end.

I like the film, mainly because of how many people for some reason flat-out don't understand the plot. It's... actually quite bizarre how many people don't.
