Man I loved Air. Because it was so short but powerful, it rivalled Clannad in terms of overall quality. The dramatic nostalgic opening never fails to captivate me. Though if we're talking movies its quite hard to get the right length and pacing of character development and adjoin it with a good climax in a theme of sadness. Probably Ghibli movies are the best.

Some of the saddest anime I have seen include Steins; Gate and another sad one is Akame Ga Kill. I suggest you watch both they are very enjoyable and you will learn to love everyone.
