On the Waterfront is a 1954 crime drama film (there's some romance in there, too) that won eight Academy Awards.
Basic Plot: Terry, our protagonist, has to do a favor for Johnny Friendly, a mob boss who he is connected through, because his brother is in the mob (so they owe Johnny a lot). Well, the favor leads to the death of Joey Doyle and the death leads to finding out who was behind it, since many murders have been occurring on the waterfront. Terry starts to fall in love with Edie, the girl who was the sister of the recently murdered man. The man he had a hand in murdering, because of the favor and all. The rest of the film we see the struggle Terry has choosing between doing what is right and doing what is wrong.
Marlon Brando as Terry Malloy (This is my first time watching something with him in it. He's so attractive! His acting is really good, too. I was kind of worried my hopes would be let down haha.)
Eva Marie Saint as Edie Doyle (She's pretty good at acting, too)
Lee J. Cobb as Johnny Friendly
Karl Malden as Father Berry
Rod Steiger as Charley "The Gent" Malloy
Not gonna lie, this movie is not necessarily spectacular. Of course, it has it's moments and that really makes the film. There's some really nice scenes that get to you and I mean the lines in the film are really good. To me, I feel like this is the kind of movie that would be better in book form if it were a book. I liked it very much though, there's a lot you can take away from it, if you're the analytical type who likes to find deeper meanings in everything. There are a lot of themes, the main theme being, choosing between what's right and what's wrong.
I think, and this is why you should watch it, that it's an allegory for the working class trying to defeat those who are in control. I mean, it's seen continuously throughout the film and Terry is like the one deciding whether or not he should go with this revolutionary decision. If you like at it like that, it becomes totally different.
As I said though, it wasn't spectacular. Half of the time I liked it and the other half not so much, but it was good and I would definitely watch it again, because it's the kind of movie you can really discuss with someone. 6.5/10???
