Permanent Midnight is a 1998 indie drama film based on the autobiographical book by Jerry Stahl.

Basic Plot: The start of the film shows Jerry talking about nearing the end of his drug rehabilitation program as he's working in his new fast food job. He meets a woman, Kitty (she also went under drug rehabilitation), who asks him if he wants to get coffee. He suddenly quits his job to get coffee with this girl at night and they go back to a motel where they have sex. While they are having sex, Jerry tells Kitty about his story of how he was a writer who started from being addicted to the various prescription meds he was on to finally being addicted to heroin.

Ben Stiller as Jerry Stahl (lol this is why I watched it, I saw his name. I didn't even know what it was about)
Maria Bello as Kitty
Elizabeth Hurley as Sandra Stahl
Owen Wilson as Nicky (Nicky is a minor character, but he is also another addict and adds more to how Jerry got into drugs)

I have to be honest, I thought this movie was kind of weird at the beginning. It didn't make sense to me. I mean the moment I saw Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, I thought, "Oh, this is a comedy" because keep in mind, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I just saw Ben Stiller and I like Ben Stiller so I was like, "What have I got to lose." But as the movie kept progressing, it was apparent to me that this was not at all a comedy, but in fact a very serious movie about drug addiction. Nevertheless, it wasn't really that good at the beginning, but once Jerry gets addicted to heroin, wow, the movie became amazing. Still very weird, but you know, I don't think I'm using the right word. Perhaps not weird, but haunting is the word I am looking for? It was a very dark movie and I thought it was really scary seeing Jerry inject the needle into himself and all the things the addiction made him do, how it affected his life, and how he eventually fell into this hole from the drugs. I think that's what truly makes the movie great.

Hey kids, don't do drugs.
