Metropolis is a 2001 anime film loosely based on the 1949 Metropolis manga created by Osamu Tezuka, which was inspired by the 1927 German silent film (also a great film!) of the same name.

Plot: In Metropolis, robots live among humans, but are discriminated against. The unofficial ruler of Metropolis, Duke Red, constructs a massive skyscraper called the Ziggurat, which will allow mankind to extend its power across the planet. At the same time as this is happening private detective Shunsaku Ban and his nephew Kenichi are traveling to arrest Dr. Laughton, a mad scientist. This same mad scientist was employed by Duke Red to recreate his daughter Tima. Duke Red's adopted child Rock, does not want Tima to be created, because like many of the citizens, he discriminates against the robots and does not want Tima to overshadow his father. Rock kills Dr. Laughton in his lab while he is making a few adjustments to Tima and tries to kill Tima, but she does not die. The blast from the gunshot Rock fired at Tima caused a massive fire to occur and as Tima escapes, Kenichi finds her and they fall into the sewer system. From there, I would be spoiling the rest of the movie (I hope I did not spoil the beginning of the movie, I feel like I did).

When I decided to get this film, I was expecting it to be like the 1927 film, but it was not. Both are entirely different, but if you watch both you can see where similar themes come into play.

I say watch it, it was really good and very vivid. It's very suspenseful. Also, the soundtrack is great, which made the film even better.

One of my first animovies. Love and hate it. But I luuuuuv it!!

wow never thought this would be seen again, but what do you hate about it? O_o

While I do appreciate the classic approach to the design, I feel the (hmm... How to put this) particular artistic style doesn't do well to compliment the darker, more sinister undertones with the overall plot. It was one of my firsts, so its nothing damning; just more like a personal opinion. Feel free to disagree.😸
