A thread for all of them.

Bilbo Baggins is swept into a quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

As everyone probably knows, The Hobbit is a novel by J.R.R. Tolkien and the prequel to the The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The book is adapted into 3 feature films under director Peter Jackson, the first of which, An Unexpected Journey came out last year, the second, The Desolation of Smaug, is in theaters right now, and the third, There and Back Again, is set for a December 2014 release.

Poster for the Desolation of Smaug because it's out right now /shrug

I went and saw it just yesterday and really enjoyed it. But after a while you just kind of know the expect a certain level of quality from a Peter Jackson/Tolkien production and it didn't disappoint. It was scenic and grand and adventurous and fun, a good time.

They should have named this trilogy "An Average Film-Maker Milks an Audience Out of 30 Million Dollars in Personal Fees and Screws His Cast Members Over in the Meantime"

I mean, come on. Stop being such a dick, Peter Jackson.

I legit know zero production details/drama in regards to these movies (except that 3 is a stretch for just one book) but I'm not sure I even wanna know...>>3

>>3 I haven't seen either Hobbit films yet, but that's probably unfair. I just got the first one on BluRay and I'm gonna watch it tonight, so I guess I'll see.

Anyways, I reckon Peter Jackson's a pretty good filmmaker. I've always thought of him as kind of a fantasy/New Zealand version of Sam Raimi.

>>5 Can we all just accept how much he fucked up the ending for number 3? No great film maker would carry through with that 20 minute long debarkle. I think much of the quality of the movies relies off the original stories and the CGI department. Also, Peter Jackson has been regarded by everybody (my father knows quite a few people who know him) as an absolute cunt. He took a 30 million dollar fee for the hobbit trilogy, while paying his cast member bare minimum. Quite a few set members and even a couple of cast threatened to leave unless they were paid more fairly. That is pretty stingy for somebody taking 30 million for their own pocket.

>>6 Alright, point seen. But I did like the movie.

I don't exactly feel cheated out of my money either. And I still think he's a pretty awesome filmmaker; LOTR and The Hobbit aside, he has made a bunch of really good films.

As with the ending of number 3, I agree with you there - at least in the theatrical version, anyway. It's been ages since I saw it, but I do remember how fucking annoying those endings were. In the extended version, the whole movie has a good 50 minutes added to it, so the ending flows with it a lot better.

It still ends about 6 times, but... yeah, you don't notice it.

...and then you tell me that you've seen the extended version and you still think it sucks. In which case, let's just agree to disagree.

Peter Jackson is an absolute cunt.
I haven't seen the second film, but I'm really wondering how it's not going to be the ending of the series...the Hobbit wasn't that long of a book...at this point it's safe to assume Mr. Jackson is milking people.

Gathering my friends to see the sequel today!
We already saw the first last year, my friends tried to pull me out of a bad position at the time. I'm forever grateful for it.

"Self-insertion is a literary device in which a character who is the real author of a work of fiction appears as a character within that fiction, either overtly or in disguise."

So is she Guillermo del Toro the fangirl or Peter Jackson the fangirl or...?

>>18 Im dumbfounded you've said that. I guess it isnt for everyone but did you possibly not understand it? are you eight years old and went to see Frozen and went into the wrong theatre?

I can understand how anyone could dislike the two movies so far. Peter Jackson has managed to fairly accurately turn the novel into a visual masterpice whilst keeping it fresh with some new story. Ive personally enjoyed all the movies so far and eagerly await the third

though it makes me wonder why it took so long... i mean the LOtR trilogy has been out for ages, how come they just recently released 'the hobbit'
