Why do they have to be Japanese? I know a few I could direct you to, but still.

Also, read through and post in this thread instead. It's pretty much the same thing, just a bit more inclusive.

I good movie I found was Battle Royale...it's like the Hunger Games but in my opinion much better. It's a little more gore-y too if you're up to it!

You could get the english dub but since you want to see the subs so you can learn japanese you can look up the subs, some movies are seperated by parts thought

10 Name: Taireita : 2013-03-01 07:55 ID:sTRRWu19 [Del]

My favourite: Confession (Kokuhaku), 700 days of battle us VS police, swing girls. If you interested in anime, you should watch Summer Wars, One Piece Movie 6&10, Spirited Away, and many more :) hope it helps

11 Name: MakeTheirDay : 2013-03-06 15:06 ID:/IfsVYoq [Del]

Hara-Kira: Death of a Samurai

If you're interested in animated movies though, then any Hayao Miyazaki film is great - Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away (like Taireita suggested), Castle in the Sky - They're all amazing :)

I haven't watched too many, but I remember a couple.

Kamikaze Girls
I don't remember too much of it, but this was one of the first things I watched in Japanese. It's been a long-ass time since I saw it, though, so I'm not sure how much help it would be. It's a movie from 2004 about a biker girl and a lolita becoming unlikely friends or something idfk

Departures
I saw this one a couple years ago, and it was actually rather interesting. You learn a bit of culture from it, and honestly its plot progression left me impressed. A good movie whether or not you're just trying to learn Japanese, especially if you observe the cultural aspect.

One movie to recommend: Battle Royale

Learning Japanese through Anime and Movies, what a retard.

>>15 No better way than application, short of dedicated classes. You get from films and pop culture what you can't from textbooks, in a sense.

Though it takes an extra sense of dedication to actually get anything out of it, admittedly, since you aren't being guided. In fact, to those that can pull it off, I would say they have all the leverage to call those that rely on tutoring to have a retarded sense of learning, but that would just be rude.

Learning Japanese through anime and movies is, for most people, often a slow process, and I think it would be more effective to take proper lessons instead.
I learned a lot from anime, but that's probably because I've watched it for maybe 10 years....

I don't know many japanese movies, unfortunately.
The ones I do know have been mentioned already.
Kamikaze girls, Battle royale.
I do know a horror movie by the name of "Chakushin Ari" though.
It's the original japanese version of a movie named "one missed call" or something like that.
It's not too scary though.

Twilight Samurai......one of my favorites.

21 Name: Misuto!M4ZBq07Cs. : 2013-03-17 23:27 ID:A7GYcohy [Del]

>>19 I've seen that one. Figured I wouldn't mention the "original version of ___ horror movie" titles because people would've already heard of them. Ringu and the original version of the Grudge also exist, but I haven't seen those.

You're right though, it's slower for those that aren't dedicated to it. Which is to say, most people. Just wanting to learn it is one thing, willing to go out of your way to study every nuance of the language through practice alone is another.

The Samurai Trilogy is a really old movie trilogy, but I love it. Here is a wikipedia link
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samurai_Trilogy
It was the inspiration for kill bill if you are into that movie. I have never watched kill bill though, but will probably get it on dvd from the library

I HIGHYLY recommend the original Grudge movie, Ju-on: The Grudge. Here's a link to it w/ English subs: http://www.putlocker.com/file/E5758245BA1F802B#

(Ultimate) Versus

Simple plot, clear dialogue (rarely obscured under music/sfx), easy to follow plot with many clichéd lines repeated with slight variations, entertaining throughout.

Ran I recently watched on Charter on demand; it`s a weird adaptation of "King Lear" with a Feudal Japanese twist. It`s really interesting.

Thanks for asking!!! Ive watched many fortunately for you and any one interested. So first off, non animated Japanese movies:
Time traveler (sequel to animated movie the girl who lept through time.)

Animated Japanese movies (I'm omitting ghibli films because you've probably heard of and watched them all.)
The girl who lept through time
Welcome to the space show
Tokyo godfathers (weird at times, just a warning.)
Paprika (super weird at times, like inception times 3)

Okay this is really irritating the names of the non animated ones are not coming to me. And I'm forgetting a lot of animated ones but whatever.

I really liked Koizora :)) but the Dorama was better I think :))

Battle Royale is an awesome movie.

Any movie by Takeshi Miike comes highly recommended (he directed films such as Audition, 13 Samurai and Phoenix Wright :P)

There also classic filmmakers such as Akira Kurosawa, who made masterpieces like Samurai 7, Yojimbo (which A Fisful of Dollars was inspired by) and Rashomon. They're very old (black and white) and are all period pieces, but are heavily influential in the cinematic landscape, and once you get into the right mind set, you'll come really to appreciate the craft and masterful skill that Kurosawa put into his films.

The Girl Who Leaped Through Time..

36 Name: Erza : 2013-11-04 07:28 ID:P3w31Rru [Del]

I'm a fan of Miyazaki films so I'm recommending spirited away and howl's moving castle

37 Name: TheFlyingLion : 2013-11-09 01:15 ID:QbJhfGks [Del]

Mm... try movies staring Toshiro Mifune, he played characters like Sanjuro in "Yojimbo" and "Sanjuro" and also Seven Samurai, and Rashomon. One film I also might recommend is the original Godzilla though if you wanna watch American or Japanese version is your choice. Maybe for modern movies I'd say Rurouni Kenshin which is based on the manga of the same name which as a movie is really good. Oh these are American made but feature great Japanese casts too called "Letters from Iwo Jima" staring Ken Watanabe and "The Last Samurai" also staring Watanabe with Tom Cruise. Last Samurai is mostly fictional but takes place during the early years of Meiji in Japan.
