Well, since film threads are apparently now popular on the film board, I'm going to start one about one of my personal favourites. I hope that some of you have heard of this film, or at least it's directors, but if you haven't then, well, you have now.
The Big Lebowski is a 1998 comedy film written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, and starring Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, and Steve Buscemi. The film is basically about Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski (Jeff Bridges), an unemployed slacker who enjoys drinking, smoking and bowling, being tasked with paying a ransom after the kidnapping of the wife of another, much richer man also called Jeff Lebowski (David Huddleston). The plan goes awry as soon as The Dude's friend and bowling partner Walter Sobchak (John Goodman) gets involved and plans to keep the ransom. And from there, shit starts to spiral out of control, leading to many hilarious encounters, and a plot that gets ridiculously and almost hilariously complicated.
Featuring a quirky cast of character, unconventional dialogue typical of the Coen Brothers, and also some awesomely trippy dream sequences, The Big Lebowski is a freaking weird film that was a disappointment at the box office at the time (as many great films are.) Over time the film has naturally become a cult favourite. There's even a freaking
religion based around it!
