This is one of my favorite movies, and I can't believe there isn't a thread for it yet!

The film is about an American military officer named Captain Algren (Tom Cruise) who is offered a job in Japan training conscripts of the new Meiji Government to supress a samurai rebellion that is opposed to Western influence, led by Katsumoto (Ken Watanabe). When Algren is taken captive by the samurai, he befriends Katsumoto and learns to appreciate Japanese culture.

It's a beautiful story about what it means to be loyal and the importance of honoring one's own history and culture. Highly reccomended to anyone who has 154 minutes to spare on a deeply emotional, action-packed, thought-provoking movie.

Sadly the man behind this great movie was less than happy with the Japanese ticketsells and commited suicide by hanging if i recall correctly. Which is ironic considering the success it had a short time later as it arrived across seas.

Awww...well that's why people shouldn't commit suicide! Things get better.
