After going through the "View All Threads" ordeal for this section, I'm honestly surprised someone hasn't started this thread yet. I'll be happy to remedy that, though. I'm not sure how true this is for other areas, but Hayao Miyazaki's films were apparently a huge part of the childhood experience where I live. I happened to miss out, but have recently taken some time to watch them. So far, I adore them. Soo...without further ado, here's the thread! Thoughts, favorites, suggestions? Feel free.

As much as I'd honor this thread, and that picture, (link me the artist if you can please), there's a thread for this in Animation:

Unless this is something on a totally different topic about Hayao Miyazaki, then I guess it could be fine.

The other one sucks to be honest. This one doesn't suck, as far as I can see. And I didn't see much. I just looked at the length of the OP. Derp.

They both had a nice picture, and yay for a paragraph of description. I favor this one too.

Anyway I've watched most of his very well-known movies: Howl's Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Ponyo, Arrietty, Castle in the Sky. I'm still missing a few big ones like Nausicaa and Totoro, but I'm planning to get to those sometime soon too.

All in all I'm not a huge fan, but I always find his films enjoyable enough. Love the grand cinematography and in most of them and the fact that there's usually more you can take from each one than what's apparent at first sight. Thare's a lot of 'magic' to them too so they make great family films overall, a bit to enjoy for all ages.

I really cant wait for his next ghibli movie, Im such a fan of his movies, my favorite is Spirited Away :)

Well, this actually does make a bit more sense, the other one /was/ a bit short and vague, so, I've only watched Spirited Away and Totoro, but..[insert Totoro theme song here]

The only one I've watched in full is Spirited Away, fantastic movie.

Where should I go from here?

Miyazaki is great, but he couldn't have done it all without Joe Hisaishi.

Y'know.. the composer of all the OSTs. While his movies are well written, I think it's the music that makes it so spectacular. I watched one of his movies muted once. Horrible.

Just pointing that out since the credit should be shared.

>>7 That's tough. I'd say Spirited Away was one of the best, so anything after that won't really compare. I think Princess Mononoke was pretty good, although it's Princess Mononoke. Not sure if you're man enough to watch a Princess movie. There's also Howl's Moving Castle, which was okay. Not his best, but it was nice. Anything else is either average or unknown territory to me.

>>2, >>3, >>4 Yeah, to be honest, as soon as I posted this here I thought, "There probably IS a thread for this under Animation. -facepalm-"

>>7 That was the first one I watched. The second was Howl's Moving Castle, which is just as wonderful in my opinion. I'd recommend that one.

>>8 Agreed. I adore Hisaishi's compositions, both for the Miyazaki movies and his independent endeavors. Thanks for pointing that out; you're absolutely right.

I love his movies! Especially Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away! Studio Ghibli FTW! I'm looking forward to watching Arietty later too!

Greatly one of the best! Especially Howl's Moving Castle and Ponyo..And then Spirited Away, plus the OSTs in the movies fit it perfectly...I like Merry Go Round Of Life from Howl's Moving Catle the best

13 Name: Bread!BREADU25mg : 2012-03-15 17:21 ID:ryZttNBV [Del]

>>12 Merry Go Round of Life is essentially the ONLY OST in Howl's Movie Castle, lol.

Seriously. Almost every other OST is just an adaptation of that song. Except for "Cave of Mind".

I'm in love with Howls Moving Castle! <3

>>8 I have Hisaishi's "Best of" album. :D His music really makes the movie.

My favorites would have to Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. Both have great messages. I don't know if you guys have seen it, but there's this blog that explains a bunch of symbols and subliminal messages in Spirited Away, and it made me love the movie more. (I don't remember where I found it though. D:)

Arrietty is coming out in the US soon, anyone going to watch it? I think we're just titling it "The Borrower" though. I'm not sure. D:

When I think about how he creates these films, the phrase always comes to mind, "A friend in weed is a friend indeed"

18 Name: Catchi : 2012-03-19 14:20 ID:m8TVxG6V [Del]

Princess Mononoke was an amazing movie, but Kiki's Delivery Service will always be my favorite.

And *flail* Miyazaki is like a genius. All his films are amazing.....

23 Name: VitrealleAurora!9mbq5YNMp2 : 2012-03-24 09:38 ID:aTGn8qFc [Del]

yes, this man is a genius. I love howls moving castle, spirited away, kikis delivery service, and Castle in the sky to name a few. The world will indeed have lost a wondrous soul when the day comes that he passes on. He is the kind of genius that walt disney was.(When disney was run by him, it wasn't the piece of political crap it is today.)

I thought Spirited Away was pretty good. I felt like it was influenced a lot by Alice's adventures in wonderland. Princess Mononoke was fantastic, 'nuff said. Oh and I saw The secret world of arrietty at the movie theater. Thought it was gonna be awful but I ended up enjoying it.

Spirited Away was definitely my favourite, followed by Princess Mononoke and Kiki's Delivery Service :D my first was Totoro! (sadly, watched Castle in the Sky until I got sick of it orz)

36 Name: MiGo : 2012-06-24 21:13 ID:1/KX7tur [Del]

Mononoke was a masterpiece!

37 Name: KatKawaii : 2012-06-25 21:56 ID:PwxOAmxy [Del]

Loved Spirited Away... Did not eat pig as much as I used to after first watching it as a kid O.O

I've gotta say that Howl's Moving Castle is my favorite...but I recently read the book that it was based on. It was good, but so DIFFERENT from the movie adaption. I can't even really consider them the same story anymore. But I highly recommend both, regardless.

39 Name: Brad : 2012-06-27 10:52 ID:Oy5cQuZ/ [Del]

I have seen a lot of these movies when I was a kid. I recently remembered most of them.

40 Name: KurukuruDaza !L1qtqVxkxQ : 2012-06-27 11:48 ID:zrU0pmO8 [Del]

>>38 Yeah they changed so much with the movie you think one would be superior but they both are great to enjoy as their own entity's.

As for Studio Ghibli movies I think I have seen everything translated into English except Pom Poko and Tales from Earthea. I'm sure most people know but Miyazaki isn't the Director of all these movies, love him but I think a good amount of people don't know any other director working with Ghibli and they do such wonderful work. Nobody ever seems to have seen Whisper of the Heart. People, seek this one out. Also My Neighbors the Yamadas , its great to watch with the parents.

41 Name: Gilgamesh : 2014-03-05 01:04 ID:5lXYvLZf [Del]

Being a fan of ghibli since I was 8 i have loved most of the movies equally, however the obvious top 5 are howls, mononoke, laputa, spirited, and nausicca. Since Nausicca is not seen by many because it is thier oldest movie I highly recommend seeing it. These are all directed by Hayao FYI. Btw a true fan cant get tired of a ghibli movie (I've seen Howls over 200 times in my life)

42 Name: Valkyrie : 2014-03-05 09:23 ID:Ax2XY6dX [Del]

Ummm, I absolutely love castle in the sky, and Kiki, and Nausicca. I also love princess mononoke too, I JUST LOVE THEM ALL!!!!!

43 Name: Era : 2014-03-08 02:03 ID:mBbZX54n [Del]

My all time favourites would be Laputa, Spirited, Howl and Totoro ^^ I saw Mononoke a long time ago, so I don't remember it well, and I really need to start watching those movies again. I just love them!

I thought it was quite upsetting Miyazaki din't get the Oscar for Up On Poppy Hill (Is that what its called) which I haven't atually seen, considering it was his last movie. He is a very imporatnt man when it comes to the history of animated movies and Im sure the Studio G movies he's made will go down in the books as classics one day.

45 Name: bang-bang : 2014-03-11 06:33 ID:RaqNvQaP [Del]

>>44 *The Wind Rises.

Yeah I find it really hard to take the Oscars seriously after seeing this article :/

46 Name: Bulma!gfkvD0.aME : 2014-03-11 07:43 ID:7lr+xH8a [Del]

>>45 Ahhh thats the one. Again., I wasnt sure on what movie it was, I just thought it'd be a nice farewell if he got it

47 Name: Sephiroth : 2014-03-13 18:18 ID:oMQtnuSR [Del]

Do you guys remember Grave of the Fireflies? Saddest movie I have seen.

48 Name: Neige !h45CN3bvL2 : 2014-03-13 20:49 ID:kIpQa09m [Del]

>>47 That's not a Miyazaki film, guy.

Brilliant movie, though.

49 Name: Salzamoz : 2014-09-24 00:27 ID:CV48PUSD [Del]

Hayao Miyazaki has been my favourite director since I was seven. The first movie I ever watched was Spirited Away and that was an absolute masterpiece (not unlike all of his movies). I recently watched his newest movie From up on Poppy hill and it was still so interesting and beautifully illustrated.

I seriously love this guy and all his movies with a passion, but my favorite would have to be Howl's Moving Castle and Arrietty. I reccomend them both.

50 Name: petrichor !4y.xHtYWhs : 2014-09-24 08:24 ID:IJlN1Ru+ [Del]

For me, there's a unique quality to Miyazaki films that can really make you forget your life for a couple hours and let you become a part of the world they present. They have the ability to make you feel like a kid again. Every one of his movies that I've watched has been a magical experience.
My favorites would probably be Valley of the Wind and Castle in the Sky.

51 Name: Ghara : 2014-09-26 08:26 ID:/kgfF2VV [Del]

My favorite will always be Howl's Moving Castle :D I love that movie more than I love my life
