Basically the brain child of Steven Moffat (also writer for Doctor Who) and Mark Gatiss, Sherlock sets out to tell the story of the famous detective, but in a modern 21st century London. Many of the details remain the same, the iconic 221b Baker Street address, the character names, the positions they hold, but they're all brought up to date with current times and events.

The casting I say plays a big part in why this show works so well, Benedict Cumberbatch plays a brilliant Holmes and Martin Freeman also fits very well in his role as Doctor Watson, this time freshly returned from the war in Afghanistan. Another thing that makes it great is the writing. It's fast paced, thrilling and witty, there aren't really any dull moments.

Mmyes, long story short, anybody watched? If not, I recommend. It's not my favorite Sherlock Holmes adaptation (that goes to the 1984 series The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes), but it's definitely above the RDJ movie as far as I'm concerned.

i must say, sorry, but i like the Watson from RDJ movie cuz he looks all fanciful. The one here looks like an original random man in a raincoat. :I

errgg.....Anyhoo, yes, mystery movies are epic and a favorite of mine. /o/

I watched this, but the first season only had 3 FREAKING EPISODES. And who knows when the second season will come out! But it is good, don't get me wrong.

I love this series! At first I was very iffy about a modern adaption, but it managed to win me over. They really captured the essence of the characters.

Oh hell, how did I miss this thread.

This series is awesome. Loved the portrayal of Sherlock that so differs from other popular interpretations of the character, and most of all the modern implementation of such a character. It made for a very interesting watch.

Excited for the next season. I was a bit upset when I found out about it's erratic release schedule at first, but it does build up the suspense given the conclsuion to the first season.

Oh gosh, didn't think I'd like the show at first. I didn't even like the look of the actors they picked so much, but IT'S AWESOME
They most certainly did the characters justice.

I hate to say it, but Moriarty is the bomb.

12 Name: bang-bang : 2012-01-18 16:40 ID:EM3LrMQ8 [Del]

This show has killed me. I am dead.

Each single episode was simply amazing in its own right. But all of them put together and given that conclusion, it just floored me. I don't know exactly what to think. Why can't TV always be this good?

I just love all the little things about this show, how they put in all kinds of hints and references that only the knowledgeable could spot, sticking so close to the original details, yet making them their own; and taking these characters, already so well known and well defined in the public's mind and breathing new life into them. I feel like everything was done with so much care and so much thought put into it.

AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH And it left me at the end with all of the feelings, despite the fact that I knew what was going to happen.

I double recommend this show now, because if with one season it was awesome, with two it's just twice as much.

Completely sucked into the fandom as of late. bang-bang said everything right.

The latest episode. I cried, I hate to admit. I knew the outcome would be okay (or, as okay as it gets in those circumstances) and still cried!

The shows ok, not what I'd thought it would be. Kind of disapointing actually...

15 Name: bang-bang : 2012-01-22 10:46 ID:EM3LrMQ8 [Del]

>>14 Before I entirely question your taste in television, could you please expand on that thought?

16 Name: Zaia VaCade : 2012-01-23 01:34 ID:6RT6erPV [Del]

Moriarty Is Real.

"The Reichenbach Fall" was the single best piece of television I have ever seen.

17 Name: Master-sama : 2012-01-23 17:20 ID:5aNY/6j7 [Del]

>>15 Don't get me wrong it's great, but I expected Sherlock to be a bit more eccentric then he was displayed. If he was even more weird, I would've been more into it. He's just that awesome!! And also I expected way more episode then there were.

John met Sherlock today. (Oh, this is his real blog from the show, by the way. It mentions Sherlock's website in this entry. Irene Adler also has a Twitter account. Moriarty/Richard Brook has an email account- there's tons of stuff BBC take from the show and makes happen/)
It's kind of like the unofficial Sherlock day.
So, happy Sherlock day!

>>20 Aw this show has such nice fans doesn't it? To come up with this stuff. And nice producers. The blogs and websites and twitters are all kind of brilliant really.

This series is really amazing. I liked how Moffat's twist on the stories from Sir Arthur's novel made it all exciting and apt for the time frame it was filmed in! My favorite episode would have to be the first, the Study in Pink, (with the way how the characters were superbly introduced and how Moffat made a twist with the case itself). I couldn't help but applaud on the second season's last episode, and how Moffat churned and mixed those scenes. Can't wait to watch the new season!

44 Name: Misuto!M4ZBq07Cs. : 2013-01-13 17:56 ID:5cIVQx3W [Del]

>>43 That's a pretty shitty thing to say in general. I've been seeing a lot of people directly comparing on series to another like watching either one is mutually exclusive. I'm sure fans of the original sherlock holmes books don't-

-okay. Maybe they do hate the new, modern series. But that's not the point.

Simply because it's a different adaptation doesn't mean it has to be in direct competition. As far as I've heard, Elementary has a decent direction with their interpretation and some people actually prefer it over BBC's Sherlock. And what is your opinion of the RDJ version? Do you hope that one fails as well?

Sherlock is a great show, but let's not invite reason for anyone to start picking apart differences in quality, because it almost certainly falls short in certain respects from the perspective of those who prefer the alternative.

45 Name: bang-bang : 2013-01-13 18:09 ID:RV9Iihkr [Del]

>>44 Thank you.

And another thing I just want to say is to remember that Steven Moffat isn't solely responsible for everything in this show. Mark Gatiss, which I mentioned in the OP, and Steve Thompson, which I haven't, each wrote a third of it. The Reichenbach Fall was in fact written by Thompson. I just wanted to mention that.

46 Name: Paraturtle : 2013-01-15 09:33 ID:mbzyDCmF [Del]

I just hope Elementary doesn't get as much 'red carpet' treatment as Sherlock. I'd rather see Sherlock become more popular amongst the general population than Elementary in the US. From what my sister has seen from Elementary, it runs like any old American Cop show. It's just another run-of-the-mill hour long cop thing.

Of course, with 1 hour and 30 minutes screen time, Sherlock has much more time to pay more attention to detail and characterization, something Elementary cannot do.

47 Name: OKC : 2013-01-17 22:41 ID:/vEpY/GK [Del]

I thought that season 1 was pretty good and I absolutely loved season 2. The plots, schemes, fascinating cases, not to mention all the witty dialogue. Sherlock is a series not to be missed.

>>46 agreed, I boycotted that one after I saw an interview with Lucy Lu where she explained it was better to have a female Watson because no one wants a homoerotic relationship between male Watson and Holmes. Bullshit. That's why I love the books/movies/Telly shows.

Also I'm just starting this show and I really wish Robert Downy Jr. Would play a minor role. It's funny when other people who have played roles like Holmes appear in the other versions of the shows.

Im watching this series now.

I like it, its well done and close to the original books, I allways recognised the references and all the characters are well defined and executed, all but Sherlock. Sherlock is too anoying.

I allways imagined Holmes as a more serious enigmatic men, not some spoiled-smart-boy.

Holmes almost never spoke out of place and mantained his misteriousness, yet here he never stops talking anoying everyone.

I love this show and it introduced me fully to Sherlock Holmes. Well I knew who the sleuth was but mostly as what people commonly know. With this show I was brought in and now am a Holmes fan. Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes is amazing and the whole cast plus his enemies are a treat to see interact.
My favorite episode is probably The Hounds of Baskerville since it's the one episode not bound by the whole Moriarty thing. Whereas everything else connects to the big evil this one is an adventure on the side, something I'd want to see y'know? The show is a real true gem.

79 Name: bang-bang : 2014-01-13 09:44 ID:RaqNvQaP [Del]

I've become a bit embittered to this show partly because my feelings for Steven Moffat's writing have become pretty negative because of his work on DW and partly because the show's fandom (which I complimented in >>21 ah what a young innocent soul I was) which can get really really unpleasant and fanatical at times (see all the grief Elementary got for example).

I'm glad to say though that that hasn't stopped me from enjoying Series 3. But I think the show reached its peak in S2, so even though it was good this time around, it didn't outdo itself quite like it did last time.

While the comeback/reunion wasn't exactly what I was expecting, and while Sherlock was still an asshole in many situations, what I liked seeing most this series was probably how apparent it was that something in Sherlock had changed. Going from "sentiment is a chemical defect found in the losing side" to "today you sit between the woman you have made your wife and the man you have saved. In short, the two people who love you most in all this world." is quite something and there are instances in all three episodes, but mot in the second one, where he's more open to others and more honest with himself about the fact that he actually has feelings and that's not a bad thing.

Another thing I liked was all the Holmes brothers/family interactions. I find Sherlock and Mycroft's relationship really interesting and liked seeing more of them and how they regard each other and their parents were a lot of fun too.

I'm....on the fence about the ending reveal lol, but anyway for now we wait.

80 Name: bang-bang : 2014-01-13 09:51 ID:RaqNvQaP [Del]

Ah another thing, I was sort of expecting Sherlock and Mary to have some sort of antagonistic attitude towards each other a la Ritchie's A Game of Shadows, and was really glad there was none of that and they really got along. Of course the last ep makes things a hell of a lot more complicated, but that's really recent and spoilers.

This show is my favorite and I love it to no end, not only because of the brilliant way they've modernized the stories; but also because they've improved on some stories as well and have fixed the plot holes and unrealistic character traits from the original stories.
I love the books, but in my opinion the show is much more entertaining and logical.
