It isn't american media, and it isn't bad writing. Some things just can't be translated to live action film properly.
How would you make a 2 hour movie represent even a single arc of dozens of episodes? How would you translate the stylistic anime physics to pure acting and cgi? It can be done, but it's incredibly difficult. It's the fault of no one - some things are just too far fetched to attempt, especially with such little understanding of the subject matter in the west.
