Hikaru no Go is a surprisingly good manga on a subject that 90% of people would say is completely boring: the game of Go.

It tells the story of one Shindou Hikaru who after stumbling upon an old Go board at his grandfather's house finds himself stuck with the spirit of a 1000 year old Go player from the Heian period in his head. Hikaru doesn't know anything about Go and doesn't really care, but because of Sai (the spirit) he finds himself playing his first game and from there slowly discovers his own talent and passion for the game.

Hikaru no Go is wonderfully thought out as to take you from cliffhanger to cliffhanger and make it real hard to stop reading, and it's amazing how a simple board game was made to seem so exciting. The story can be read even without knowing anything about Go, because it's more about characters and how they mature and follow their ambitions than the game itself.

Also the art is done by Takeshi Obata, the same guy that does Death Note and Bakuman, with HikaGo coming before those two. The art style changes through the manga and you can literally see how the artist developed his skills from the not so great beginning to the end that comes closer to the style he used for Death Note.

This turned out unnecessarily long but I feel like praising this manga because it gets so left behind by other more cool looking attention grabbing shounens that aren't necessarily as good. So all you bored people looking for a good story go check it out.

>>2 Ma'am I was just about to make my own hikari no go post before you beat me. It is what I consider one of Shonen's best manga. IT has stable plot. Exciting games. Unique and complex characters. And good drawing that has been consistent since chapter one....GOOD STUFF

I like it myself. :3 Never actually read the manga but watched the anime. The art does seem stable, as does the plot and it's very realistic. ^^; though people will argue about Sai being realistic, but the emotions were very real.

>>5--And I like how the characters actually act like their own ages

>>7 And how you can actually see them mature, emotionally and physically too. And you don't even notice it happen, they're just grown up at one point.

The only bad thing I can think of when it comes to this manga is the ending. Which wasn't much of an ending at all really.

Ooh, I used to read this in Shonen Jump. It was awesome how they also included rules and hints for playing the game IRL if you were interested. I actually think the manga is a lot better than the anime.
