Fashion - High or Commercial? (32)

I know that we have a few designers lurking about in BBS, as well as people who make their own costumes or design outfits for their character art. When it comes to designing and/or producing fashion, what do you prefer to design? High fashion or commercial fashion? ...don't know the difference? Allow me to explain.

High Fashion is usually very expensive to produce and therefore buy. Both the designing and producing are high quality, very "out-there", and the majortiy of them are hand-fitted when sold (although, buying them is generally difficult, if even possible with some pieces). It can range from something very intricate to something simple in design but difficult in sewing/production. Few high fashion creations are mass produced, for many are done by hand. It is extremely creative, and it is mainly an artistic outlet. Accessories are usually specially created to go with a particular high fashion outfit. High fashion designs are rarely seen off the red carpet and runways, although they do (rarely) make an appearance in the movies. They are often seen in the more famous fashion and modelling magazines.

Commercial Fashion is everyday styling. Those jeans you bought? That cute dress you bought? That bad ass trench coat you found online? That frilly shirt? Those are all commercial fashions. Some commercial fashions are made as crude copies of high fashion pieces, but they rarely use the same materials, and so the flow and appearance is strange compared to the original. Details have to be left out since it's difficult to do the hand-made parts in mass productions. Commercial fashion is more common, and it is easier to become successful in it compared to a job in high fashion, for it is less expensive to start, and there is a higher demand. The main downfall to commercial fashion is the endless amount of competition.

It is often said that there is a lot of animosity between the two groups with both designers and models. In modelling shows, both designers and models too frequently agree that commercial models are cheap and of a whole different species. Despite the controversy, many high fashion designers started out as commercial designers.

So, designers, artists, and fashionistas - What do you prefer to create? High Fashion or Commercial Fashion?

Commercial fashion? Here's an example.

High fashion example? Here.

Keep in mind, there are always some exceptions to the things I said in the main post. That's the general description of the two.

Well when it comes to my designing of clothes I like to keep it at a mixture of both commercial and High fashion I know it sounds weird by it usually comes out looking good but I like keeping it high fashion even though it's a bit expensive sometimes >.<

>>4 So you're style is probably like the exceptions. It's more of a commercial level cost with high fashion details, right?

I like to design high-fashion, but I don't have the fundings right now for it. I have several lines worth of designs put together and ready for when I have money and the proper materials to do it, but I only make cheap dresses and such at the moment.

>>5 haha yeah I guess but I like keeping it elegant also but at times vintage
>>6 Really ?? Thats so cool I love how High fashion looks its simply great and yeah the prices can be expensive but I'm sure you make great dresses ^.^

8 Name: BarabiSama!!C8QPa1Mt : 2012-04-08 17:50 ID:7m8KjmUD [Del]

>>7 What kind of vintage? Do you mean vintage as in victorian, or vintage as in '40s-'60s styles? I like to mix victorian with modern punk. It sounds weird, but with the right color scheme and detail, it ends up sort of new yet classy.

The main cost is the materials for designing :O If it's expensive to create, it's expensive to buy. I have a lot of designs that would need silk and velvet, as well as few that need special cottons. I obviously can't afford that at my age, but good fabric is needed for high fashion. It's really difficult to get successful in it, but I can dream lol

I don't know why, but I'm really bad a designing general clothing. I can make normal shirts and such; they're just never the types of things people would wear. I think it's because I'm not good with trends, which you need for commercial fashion. When you're someone known for high fashion, you're the one setting trends, you know?

I dunno. It's weird. I wish I could post pictures, but my computer won't read my SD card :V

Haha yeah at times like 80's Vintage but mixed with modern day commercial clothes so its rather interesting so yeah ^.^
And whoa :O Victorian and Modern Day punk?? Tht sounds really awesome!! And all I can say about materials is.. Well save up I guess? Or probably look around for gpod deals if there are any on the type of fabrics you want but yeah velvet and silk are lovely but expensive .. Haha
And the shirts sound interesting :O how do they come out like ? XD

>>9 They're either too plain or too detailed. I just can't find a happy median >o< Also, I like to use lace a lot, but using lace and such on a shirt is difficult. With a dress, you can hide the sewn/ironed parts beneath the skirt and have it come out from under, but you would have to make the shirt in an obnovious number of pieces to do that. You can't do a fold-over hem on the actual lace unless you have the right materials to make it a permanent fold (because cheap lace is thick and will unfold itself). I can't wait until I can afford decent lace.

And, yeah, they're expensive materials, but it's the type of stuff that I want my good designs to be made of ;O It would be a waste to design something nice and then make it with cheap fabric.

That's the main downfall of cosplays you buy online. Despite their three hundred dollar price tags, they didn't use good fabric. The popular cosplay companies tend to just use the cheapest polyesters, felts, and cottons they can get, so it looks cheap and obviously fake. When an artist designs something, they make the flow fit the fabric it would be made with, which is what a good mangaka/animator does. So if they use the wrong fabric, the flow is off.

Anyway, [/endrant] you should show me some of your designs ;P

>>21 Well, personally I think fashion should reflect one's image (and still be comfy, I hate wearing tight fitting clothing, evil). And that..well that's it. Oh well.

When it comes to creating costume designs I usually don't work along these lines, first time I've heard of it to be honest,I usually try to capture the characters personality through their clothing by implimenting certain characteristics from animals, elements, post modern styles and so on, if my characters were to have a high end fashion then it would probably result in the character being Rich, royal, possibly rude and an ego, this isn't the case for all characters, creating random bits and pieces that don't often fit together is also something I try to present, this helps the characters look orginal but they key to this is the colour scheme, there are a lot of variables that come into play when creating a character, a character that I've been at most impressed by is Shimakaze from Kantai collection, this character works so well due to all of the above.
Knowing what goes with what in an outfit is also very important, you don't wear jeans with a dress, a tank top with a long skirt wouldn't look all to great too, but yet again you could add Accessories to make the outfit look more appealing and original if you can pull it off.

>>25 YOU.
hai.

I was actually going to remake this thread, but since it's here anyway, I'd just like to say 1) that my designs are better now than what I posted in 2012 and that 2) I've gotten better at doing designs that could be commercially produced.

I was going to make my prom dress, as well, but I just couldn't find any material that inspired me. I then bought a shorter dress that I posted in the stalker thread. I ended up looking online and finding a whole ensemble that I like, as attached.

The black skirt is a bustle, meaning it's open in the front and drapes around the back. The white skirt is a petticoat, which holds the champagne tulle skirt up so that it won't lay completely flat. The petticoat is going to be cut a bit in the front so I can pull the tulle skirt's front hem up to show the leggings and shoes. The bow from the tulle skirt is going to be moved onto the hat because the corset will cover the top of the skirt anyway. The champagne wrap is going to be tied to give the illusion of sleeves since there's no distinct top of the dress; depending on how bad the cleavage is in that corset, I might use to cover that as well. The clip is going to be used either to accent something or to keep the wrap in place. Stockings, gloves, and bracelets are self-explanatory.

The issue I'm running into is that I really wanted there to be a red accent. I was going to do ivory colored instead of champagne, but all the ivory tulle skirts I found were either too ugly or too expensive, so I had to use champagne. Champagne is already kind of pink, so wouldn't the bright red look bad with it? I'm really not sure what other color could accent it D:

If you look really closely at the shoes, the fabric part of it also has a plaid pattern with a red accent line, which is also pressuring me to make sure there's some kind of red elsewhere on the outfit. Not to mention that I already had plans for a red rose corsage to match bright red lipstick and need something else to show that. Maybe just a red ribbon around one of my legs? I could work it into the fishnet so it doesn't fall down and then put a really subdued red chain or something on the hat. That should balance out everything, right? ugh, it's so hard to tell when I don't have the items in front of me x-x

That steampunk-esque style of the dress is really cool! Do you purchase these items, and then put them together into your own outfits, or do you make everything yourself? :O

I switched the gloves and stockings out with cheaper alternatives. The quality isn't as good, but I think the styles are actually more fitting to the outfit. We'll just have to see. These types of items I can always get offline, so I didn't want to risk putting more than a few bucks out for either when I can't see them in person.
