I’ve been debating on doing this thread for a few month now, and I finally got up the courage to do it!!

This'll be my thread of my crappy(or not so crappy) art. My art style changes a lot because I have not decided on one whole heartedly yet, and I want you guys’ help with choosing one!

Lots of them kind of look like you still use bases.

I mean, not just the ones that are obviously MSPaint-retools of Homestuck artwork.

Is there any process to your art style? Even if your style keeps changing, surely there has to be some common basis. When an artist is trying to develop a solid style, usually there are only detail-oriented differences, not radical shifts in anatomy and proportions.

Which ones look like bases? o_O And no, if your talking about the meme when you say "MSPaint-retools of Homestuck artwork" I can assure you I didn't do that -_-

The proces to my style is I generally do the head and basic body shape first, then the main shape of the body. I'll post a step-by-step drawing if you want?

It's mostly the fact that they look rather low-res, with a flat, paint-bucket coloring style.

And I hope I'm misreading that response about the homestuck sprite art - image splicing is not the same as doing art yourself, since you're piecing together different images that someone else drew. Given, there is an art to doing it right, but I wouldn't attribute it to one's own personal style.

And you clearly use MS Paint, or some equivalent. Other image manipulation programs handle resizing images much more accurately.

If it would help you decide on an art style, go ahead and do a step-by-step for your own reference. Still don't see how you could, if it allegedly "always changes" anyway.

Ok, I think either you or I miss-read something, because I know just going back over something and changing features is not doing your own art. I am not image splicing, I did all of those myself (minus the quest bed which I had a friend do) I did the sprites of my character too big and had to resize them and your right that I probably should have just redrawn them and left out the pixel factor.

Honestly, THIS is why I waited so long to do this XD I knew you would do this, Misuto san, and sorry that you think I'm just splicing pictures together, but seriously -_-

So, do you want me to keep posting my art in the art sharing thread and just delete the things from this? Cuz I don't really feel like having a thread for me to only be wrongfully flamed on. (That's a serious question BTW, do you think I should just go back to posting on the sharing thread?)

I figured I was being overly tame about my criticism, I could have said far worse if flaming is what you wanted. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that flaming was not equivalent to disagreeing mildly.

I thought I had misread when you said the thing about the sprites - I had doubts about it, and thought you might've been admitting to not doing them yourself, or at least splicing.

But I'll ask one more time just to make sure I'm really not just having an off day comprehending text.

When I say from scratch, I mean not splicing - which I also said wasn't necessarily a bad thing, so to lie about that is just downright silly.

I wasn't really accusing you of anything in the other pictures, just commenting on how it was very similar to how base-users generally detail things. But I'm also not infallible at discerning this, so that accusation itself might be out of line.

But yeah, as Nomura said, don't delete your thread just because someone took issue with it. That already happened before, and you know how well that turned out. It just leaves a bad impression in general if you can't even own up to a mistake, or defend yourself.

I will reiterate as a disclaimer, since you're apparently the most sensitive fucking thing. I'm not flaming you - I was asking a legitimate question, and making criticism. Try not to take offense, and if you do, I apologize, but take it like a real person :|

the one that stands out as most likely to be a base is >>4 because, most of your lines are thick and look like they're 2px but that one has 1px lines. :T

I used that for refrence, I lookes on google for cat cirl bases because I wanted to practice with body shape. Sound outlandish? Yes, yes it does, but believe me or not that's the truth and I'm still damn proud of how it turned out XD

I can literally find which one you used in this set, and line it up perfectly (maybe a small few pixels off).

It's one thing to use a base, it's another to trace, and it's a third thing to draw entirely in someone else's style and call it your own. It's not even improvement if you just copy completely. Using a reference is fine, but you were insisting that you were completely original about it, and it was the direction your art style was taking!

Using cheap methods like that is just fine if you're casual about it; nobody will give a shit. But do not try to show off your art, when you weren't the one that put the effort into making more than half of it. Copying doesn't count as effort, and even though you maybe have deviated a little bit from the original, it's still not your style. Try to understand this.

Let me rephrase that last part.

I meant, do not show off your art and call it your own style. Lots of people use references to draw, and they end up looking very similar to the original - but this is mostly due to copying the pose, down to the very last detail.

However, there are also lots of people who will draw an image based on another one, and make it their own. What you did was, literally, copying - doesn't matter that you might not have traced, or that you might not have used a base. It may have come out nice, but the fact still stands that you were not using your own personally developed style.

If you're ever unsure if you're drawing in your own style, if that's a real problem you have, then consider this:
One can draw in their style without looking at anything else. They don't need a reference, except for positioning or minute details only.

Like I said, believe me or not, I did not use those bases. And also since this obviously bothers you so much just let it fall to the depths of the site. I do not really care. I have told you the truth and you are completely free to believe that I am a lying bitch. I only made this to show what pictures I have done and are proud of.

Sorry you think what you think, but all that matters to me is that I have told you the truth.

I didn't even say it was a bad thing to post art, as long as you were honest about copying from references. I even explained why that was okay. It's a pity you refuse to listen to reason, given so much leeway.

There is a reason I take so much offense to this. Some people work hard to learn and develop their own style, but because of exploitation, it has become so very easy for anyone to walk in, make a template out of someone else's art, and then call it their own.

And for the record, you are the only person I have seen in the entire fandom that claims their splicing is completely original.

All I am saying is that I didn't use that one. And I honestly do not care anymore. If it would make you feel better/accomplished with getting me to admit I plagerized then Sure I used those bases. If it is true or not does not really matter anymore, as long as you can just let all this die I believe everyone will be happier for it -_- And I never said splicing was origional! And if I messed up with something I said and made it sound like that's what I meant, it is the opposite. Splicing is NOT origional art. Lastly I was never trying to make you pity me

Don't get all dramatic. When using MSPaint you have to be very careful about using references and adding enough of your own flair to it. This program is notorious for tracing and copying and if you don't want to be accused of that then try to develop your own unique style. Don't use Homestuck style. Look around at more art and think about how you want yours to look. Think about things like how you want your faces to look, think about what styles of art you think look great. Maybe you want to go for a more stylized way of drawing people than a realistic one? Maybe you want your style to look more Anime-esque than Western? It's all about developing your own style so please, don't just copy someone else's. Maybe there's a certain thing you like about Homestuck stlye? Try and incorporate that into your own personal thing. It's a key part of developing as an artist.

when I have done a down drawing I sometimes use my scanner an then try colour itin with MS paint :P its a pain in the backside to do it with MS paint btw.
