I took this picture of a Graffiti on my school wall a year ago. This Graffiti is different though, it actually doesn't relate to gangs but it relates to the school (my school lacks imagination). I have a question for you guys, do you think this is art?

Also, if you have a Graffiti picture you want to share (from you, not from the internet) please do, i would appreciate it

It's an art in my eyes. Anyone who says otherwise is just biased due to the simple fact that gangs are known for vandalizing walls with graffiti. Not all graffiti creations are related to gangs. People should understand that more.

It really depends on the graffiti, like if it's a a random picture of a dick on say, ToysRUs VS a stunning spray painted mural, stencil or uplifting statement.
It really depends on what it is and where it's placed.

Also, I saw this thing on tv years ago; It was a European country/city (I wanna say France, but idk) that held graffiti competitions to brighten up old buildings or something. The ones that lost got painted over, but the ones that won got to stay til the next year! It was so cool!

Certain things yes, others just people trying to be cool.
Ive yet to see one that i would call art

This one is off google from Germany.

we have actually covered this in a class of mine. it all depends on intent. if you're doing it to claim turf or just to be a dick, then no, but if you actually intend to deface a building or other type of property in the name of making a work of art, good or not, then it is art.

>>5 and that's because in Germany, the majority of the graffiti IS art and it is actually considered an honor to have an artist "tag" your place up

It would depend. While I was on a train going through New York, I saw tons of it on buildings and other trains. I consider the more creative ones to be art, such as multi-color and bubble letters, even tribute ones, But the ones that are just tags, the stick figures/letters, and ones that are just curses DEFINITELY ARE NOT.

The word "graffiti" has a bad stigma, I think it's why people are starting to call stuff like >>5 as "Urban Art"

It's amazing! we can't do that since we live in a small town. It makes sense. : )

>>9 Tags are the building blocks of graffiti, you'll find that almost all the artists that do murals and pieces talk about how much they love tags. You've probably seen only tags of people who half ass it, but a tag that's been worked on enough should be considered art.

>>12 There is a small difference between graffiti and urban/street art. Graffiti is going mainly with the aim of getting up and getting known, the kind of things where the artist only put's up their name/symbol, no matter how complex, is graffiti. Urban art is different, it's more about getting a message out or just begin seen but it doesn't focus on getting known, so on a lot urban/street art pieces, like the one above, you won't see the name of the artist who actually did the work.
