How I draw eyes (44)

This is the first, and so far only, style I've developed for drawing eyes. I'm just starting out, so I'm using something that is easy to do and easy to remember. I'm trying to branch out and find more ways, though.

How is it? Feel free to critique it, and if you want to, you can copy it, but don't claim that you made it, please.

This was made using MS Paint, although I literally draw them just like this.

I will admit I was heavily influenced by Lucky Star's art style.

3 Name: Testarossa : 2011-07-12 11:15 ID:MJ/T/aAp [Del]

Interesting.... can we see it colored in so I can distinguish what's eye and what's not?

I'm confused.

Wait, what? I honestly don't get it.

6 Name: iKn0wz : 2011-07-12 23:03 ID:EsOSfSAf [Del]

this made me confused too...

7 Name: Kaku : 2011-07-12 23:36 ID:MC9xhv2X [Del]

I think it'll look better with a bit of colour, even just a bit of black for the pupils would look better. Cos right now it just looks like a square with some lines in it, and can't really tell what it is (as evident by the comments above me).

I don't get it, shouldn't an eye be kinda round-ish?

Sorry guys, haven't been on here in a couple of days. I don't have a way to color them in yet, but this is an idea. It's still not done, though, and I still have to mess around with it.

To the people commenting on the shape, look at this picture. Box-shaped eyes are still eyes.

Will you be adding more colors..? I really want to see where this will heads to!

The iris surrounds the pupil.
I can see how your eye resembles this when it`s coloured, but I think you should try to get the iris to surround the pupil, rather than have only a small bit of it exist. It will look more like an eye that way and less like a bunch of lines :P
I am interested in seeing how it looks when they are on a head, though.

Hmmm, if you squint your eyes real hard, it kinda sorta looks like an eye, probably.

Yes, I have. Ha ha.

By the way, something still seems off about the colors, so I'll mess around with it more.

I have limited experience in drawing, but I think I can offer some sort of opinion on this method.

Instead of trying to define it in such a shapely manner, just try to draw it - if you define your eye shape in such a way, you're doomed to only being able to draw one kind of eye.

Of course you can define your style, but rather than careful conceptualizing, it takes lots of practice and tweaking. Generally one doesn't say "alright, my eye is going to be a SQUARE, with a CIRCLE retina and TRIANGLE SHAPES for the eyelashes." They piece it together to see what works - pupil shape, iris, whatever-the-other-parts-of-the-eye-are-called... etc. A lot of times, artists don't have their own style for things until they've tried and tested all the others.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with this way either, I've just never seen it done. To comment on the style itself though, I'm not seeing where the pupil is - generally, it's to be surrounded by the iris, and nothing's surrounding anything in the image. I was thinking the pupil was the darker shade on the bottom for a while, but I'm not quite sure - is the eye looking down?

I'd like to see it looking in different directions.

>>31
I was planning on improving it, but the is just what I'm starting out with.

You can consider the black line a pupil if you want, but not all styles have pupils. (See pretty much every KyoAni-made anime ever.)

Anyway, I never said this is what my style will always look like, and I'm sure it won't. The shape will most likely be more rounded out, and it might actually lose the square shape. I literally started drawing seriously a few months ago, so give it some time.

And the eye was supposed to be looking forward. This is an example of how a character's eyes would be if they were looking towards you in this style. I left out the color because I still don't know how I'm going to color it.

>>33 OOOHHHHHH. wen u puts two o' dem next to each other it really helps U_Ub yeah i also agrees wit misu on dis, and also, if the character was looking towards you, would the eyess beh a little farther apart? lyke teh pupil parts more towards the middle of each blox? o-O" not sure, i wus jist wunderun cuz im tuu lazeh to actually do it muself

35 Name: Misuto!M4ZBq07Cs. : 2011-07-24 00:17 ID:U9w4O2YC [Del]

The pupils are just defined a little differently in KyoAni's style - they make it fade into the iris but they show it vaguely whenever there's shine. It's where the shine appears to cut off.

You misunderstand what I was trying to say about being restricted to one type of eye. It depends on the style, I guess, but sometimes different characters have different shapes for eyes and, depending on how unique the artist decides to make each one, you can actually tell who it is by the eye alone. When defining the style itself by a rigid framework, I've found it hard to variate. But I've seen styles where this isn't the case as well. It was just a personal concern, not a absolute truth.

Okay, so the black line is the pupil? So that would move up and down if they were looking in those directions, right? I was wondering, because it would be difficult to show if they're looking up and down otherwise.

I see what Kao's saying though - without being used to the style it sort of looks a little crosseyed. After looking at it for a while it doesn't anymore, but think of it this way - what if you actually had to make someone look crosseyed, or focused on something right in front of them? You're out of room!

Are eyebrows going to be involved in the finished product as well? My next question would be about different emotions.

36 Name: Kaori : 2011-07-24 13:02 ID:RJZydQf4 [Del]

tru, tru, and also, my weird suggestionz wuds be if teh eye
-colored part- was be a sircle instead. or sumthin just a lil' rounder, cuz, if u take teh surrounding box away and leave it wi' just the parts sposed to be thur, it luks a little...strange? o-o idk, i think i used to draw lyke dat before an luking back to it, it luks really strange T^T

but yeah, its all ure choiceh, so i hopes you duz good wit dees eyes! 8D

37 Name: Kaori : 2011-07-24 13:09 ID:RJZydQf4 [Del]

oops, sorreh for teh double post, but i just rememberd dat, sumun said the eyes wus be like konata's? well luking at her picture, teh colored part of her eyes are wider, just saying >_>>>>>>> so if u were trying to make it a lyke konata's.....lulz, picture is of konata dressed up lyke haruhi frum dat one episode

http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/0/2488/820418-konata_cosplay_super.jpg

38 Name: Misuto!M4ZBq07Cs. : 2011-07-24 14:53 ID:U9w4O2YC [Del]

Just commenting on that. Konata's eyes aren't square in that picture, they're perfectly round. She just has lazy eyes and they're always half-closed, which sort of squares them off. The effect is intended, and all the other characters have rounded eyes.

Hi Everyone, Kite Asakura here ^^ just saw something that really caught my attention. We should start up a comic or Fanmade videos of amines we would love to show everyone what we're working on or what anime we're into ^^. Sorry if this sounds dumb or something but I think this would really inspire poeple to create their own anime or at least help make things more fun for the Dollars Art Board ^^ Please add any comments or any add on's to this. Thank You all for your time and laterz ^^

Radical Drawings putting everyones scence in one big story, like taking one Panel and mixing it with someone else and see what we get. like a funny story or a pretty badass anime comic ^_^

I've rarely seen pupils in Kyoto Animation's stuff. Even when I looked for them.

Keep in mind this isn't the only kind of eye I will use. This is just what I'm using to practice, and I might not even use this in anything final.

Yes, the black line is the pupil.
I tried moving the pupils closer to the center, but the eyes are so big that it made it seem...derpy.

And yes, there will be eyebrows. Possibly. I'm thinking of just changing the shape according to how eyebrows would change it.

>>37
I was talking more about the shape, not the eye itself.

>>38
Minor technicalities, to quote my history teacher.

>>42
I draw when I don't have anything to do. I'm planning on becoming a video game designer and/or a mangaka, so I'll be drawing a lot in the future.
