If you notice, posting a '<' and '>' will remove all the text between them. This is because normally something like <i>, <b>, etc are supposed to be HTML tags and not actually posted. For instance, you don't want to see <i><b>this</b></i>, you want to see this.
You can escape both of those characters by surrounding them in an opening and closing angled bracket. For instance, <<> will post a single <.
