Bored at uni. Thread time.

Kyuss is a hard rock/stoner rock band formed in 1987 in Palm Desert, California. Highly influential in stoner rock circles, Kyuss' best work basically amounts to space-y, bass heavy hard rock jams, featuring plenty of groove-oriented guitar/bass riffage, steady, pounding drum lines, and John Garcia's strained but powerful shout-singing vocal style. Also present are elements of heavy metal and psychedelic rock, and often extended guitar solo's courtesy the great Josh Homme, who many will now know as the man behind rock giants Queens of the Stone Age.

Kyuss' only constant members were guitarist Josh Homme and vocalist John Garcia, although in its short lifespan it gave birth to many musicians who went on to do various other projects within the genre, such as Nick Oliveri (QOTSA, Monod Generator), Scott Reeder (The Obsessed) and Brant Bjork (more QOTSA, solo work). In a career spanning about 8 years the band released 4 studio albums, Wretch, Blues for the Red Sun, Welcome to Sky Valley and ...and the Circus Leaves Town, and a split with QOTSA while Josh Homme was making the transition.

The band partially reformed in 2010 under the moniker Kyuss Lives, but after a butthurt Josh Homme took legal action against them, changed the name to Vista Chino, with the lineup of John Garcia, Brant Bjork and newcomer Bruno Fevery, with Nick Oliveri apparently serving as an "honorary band member." They released a studio album, Peace, in 2013, and have teased further work for 2015. Personally, I'm fucking excited.

For people who are interested in getting into this band, I highly recommend the albums Welcome to Sky Valley and Blues for the Red Sun, both considered to be the bands best works. For more mainstream rock fans or fans of QOTSA looking to go back, ...and the Circus Leaves Town might be a better choice, as it focuses more on songs than the jam-oriented style of the other albums.
Wretch is good, but comparatively doesn't hold up, and I'd say is for hardcore fans only. Same with the split EP, which contains a pretty awesome cover of the Sabbath classic "Into the Void," but little else.
