Has anyone read the manga/novel?
Its kind has the same stuff that happens in the anime.
So my guestion you guys if you read the manga/novel, what do you think of it and did you read it first or after the anime?

DRRR!! is one of the few series where I prefer the anime over the manga. I love how the anime is pieced together, and the character it has. The manga didn't have that same quality and didn't keep me reading.
I do however love what I have read of the light novels, and I want to read all of them. :D

I wish I would've read/watched in the order it was made, light novel; anime; manga,but i saw anime first and then read the manga. I haven't read the light novel yet, but I'm reading Baccano! which is by the same person who wrote the light novel. Both animes were by the same people. I expect that te light novel will be good so i'll be reading that next.

The novel is the shit >.< ♥ I've just started reading volume 1 in class today and so far it is sweet! I can't wait to get to volume 3 cause the anime ends in volume 2-ish of the novels from what I've seen. I wanna know what happens next xDD *cant wait to meet Aoba*
I wasn't really able to get into the Manga too well though '~' it seemed like it was lacking that spark that the anime and novel had.

There are nine volumes of the light novels. Anni did not bother with the first three, as the anime covers those events. Volume one has been completely translated by differentclouds on lj, however, if you still would like to read it. Anni has completely translated volumes four, five, and six. She skipped translating volume 7 & 8 in favor of working on the recently released volume nine, which is still in progress.
Snippet means she just translated maybe a page or a scene of a chapter, possibly because it was requested, or because it was a scene she liked.

Love both the anime and the manga (of what I've read so far). Personally, though, the MAIN preference I have in the manga over the anime is that I like the way Izaya is portrayed a lot more in the manga. His facial expressions, for example, are much better and there's a lot more substance to him too - I'm going to read the novel at some point soon, when I can. But everything surrounding it is very good.

I actually prefer the light novels.
I read them before I saw the anime and was actually VERY disappointed with the anime.
The novels are far more engaging.

I've read a bit of the manga, liked it way better then the anime, but the manga website I read everything on is getting rid of all the mangas I've been reading. Durarara isn't on there any more. I've been collecting the individual manga volumes. I know it's not exactly like what happened in the light novel... But we don't have that in the UK so this will have to do. Anyway, they're awesome, I watched the anime (3rd favourite) and I wanted to read it too, so I did and was thankful that I bought it, now I just have to wait until volume 4 is released here.

Ummmmmmm... ok... I need someone to explain to my why everyone loves Izaya, please. I get that he was basically a crazy and awesome and intelligent guy, but seriously, I need this explained to me in words. And if you're wondering, my favorite characters are the main three (Mikado, Masaomi, and Anri), and I love Shizuo because of his friggin crazy awesome rampages and how he can beat up a hundred people possessed by an evil being and finally learn to control his power in such an epic way. Many people even admit that they can't beat Shizuo and that he's the strongest person in town, which is also part of why i love him so much.

LN all the way (i don't read the manga cause i don't like the art style) the LN was better than the show no doubt, and that's saying something cause I HATE books. the LN was just better but a big part of it is that i won't accept none canon things with DRRR!! although the anime follows the LN rather well there are changes and so i watch the anime and read the LN cause i want to know what everything looks like but i like the writing style of the LN and it's the original of all DRRR!! things..... but there's exceptions to everything and my exception is the fact that i ship Izaya x Namie even though its not entirely canon (the LN does supply fan service for it though) well that's it... I haven't read the manga... last time I checked in mangafox it was still when Celty and Izaya follow Mikado to his apartment, where Harima Mika is hidden.
What I have read is the full light novel series, plus the first volume of the sequel Durarara SH.
I think the overall story to be 10/10 (fangirl mode active) or at least 9/10 (being serious and nitpicking).
I must say though that I was disappointed with some characters by the end of the original story but I love it nonetheless.
I adore most of the volumes but if I were to choose three... they'd be Volume 9, Volume 13 and perhaps either Volume 5 or 6.
Truth be told I watched the anime in 2011 and didn't like it much. In October 2014 I came to know a second season of Durarara was coming out and because I had watched Baccano a week before and enjoyed it... well, I decided to give it a try again. And became addicted.
I new it was based on a light novel series but didn't know where to find them online. A user in one of the chatrooms gave me some links and that's how I entered the black hole of Durarara hahaha.
Now I'm a huge fan of the show... and of Narita too.

I don't even know if this thread is still "alive" but yes the novel is good. The manga is, too. For me, the problem of the manga though is that it's kinda more confusing??? idk. the novel, manga, and anime tell the same story but a bit on different ways. ( e.g. in the novel, when kida "disapeared after vol. 3 (?), he didn't keep "reappearing" after. like he didn't have appearances here and then. in the anime's season 2, kida keeps freaking appearing. )

Izaya was too traumatized and is probably even afraid of Shizuo after Vol. 13 since he beat him up really bad. He left Ikebukoro and cut ties with everyone there. He's on a wheelchair now and as far as I know, won't be recovering any time soon since he doesn't want to. He isn't on Durarara SH ( the Raira trio novel I mentioned earlier) but he does have his own novel run right now. There's a new cast though and I don't think the original cast would be there :( [ there's an illustration of namie in the novel though so i hope she shows up! ]

I watched the first arc then I heard about the novels, and because I prefer reading in general over watching, I continued reading the novels.
I really love the arrangement of the events and connections between the characters. It reminds me of an old series in my native language.
I also watched the episodes that the first 4 novels covers, the main difference is some events and minor dialogue changes - which is understandable since there is no limitation like time on the novels - and I personally feel that I understand the characters motives better in the novels.
Still, the anime is awesome! and it has the thing the novels can't offer: the music.

i just finished reading the 2 izaya light novels (sunset & standing ovation) and i loved them!!! what are your thoughts?

I'm currently on vol 6 of the light novels and I'm absolutely loving them so far.
If you've seem the anime and aren't sure if the books are worth reading or not, I say go for it.
Narita has a great writing style, the novels flesh out some of the characters better, and there are enough differences to keep things interesting.

I personally went into the manga series first then made my way into the anime it just makes more sense to gather more information on the subject and then do it

I read the novels only after finishing the anime, like, all of the seasons. After reading all the volumes, I must say that Drrr!!x2 was kind of disappointing compared to the novel. The first season, on the other hand, is simply beautiful! The way they organized the story, the plot twists, the introduction of all the characters... it made you feel things for them, whether they were good or bad. You empathized with some characters, you felt hate for others.
Sadly, for me, this doesn't happen in Drrr!!x2: I noticed a complete lack of depth in most characters (and there were many new ones which all felt really bland) but it's not like that in the novel!
Durarara has a really long, complicated story, which a novel can easily describe and readers can understand the character's feelings, actions, thoughts... this hardly happens with most animes because it's simply harder to realize. In my opinion, though, this was perfectly accomplished in S1 but then, with the other seasons, it felt like something was missing. Also, the studio that made S1 is different from the one that made Drrr!!x2, so that may also be another reason.

No steve your right. I read the light novel. Exactly like the anime, but the anime had more details about the characters, I will say that he made several light novels that got better and better each time, so yeah.akirakki was right.

Nothing inherently wrong with it tbh, besides, Durarara is notorious for having a complex story, so I kinda get how it would be a difficult story for someone to get into.

I have a copy of the 1st LN but can't find it anywhere ;__; I want to reread it so much... someday I want to buy the rest as well. I've never watched the anime so I can't compare it to that. However, DRRR! has so many characters that I just assume it's easier to consume as an anime, it would be harder to remember them all without visuals (wasn't a problem for me since I read a bit of the manga first but it was a big problem when I read the 1st Baccano LN without knowing any of the characters...)
