You should try Yamishibai I think it's called, they are actually more of a horror rather than just a bloody murder anime. It has a strange animation and each episode is 3 - 7 minutes but there is t much of a story just more about short horror stories of folklore Japan. If your looking for creepy rather than gory, you should really watch this (not all episodes are creepy)

Another for classic horror (dark lighting, soundscapes, mood, etc.), Blood-C for a gore-fest, School Days for a depraved acid trip of a story, No. 6, Future Diary, Mirai Nikki, or Tokyo Ghoul for something with an actual plot.

I personally really liked Higurashi No Naku Koro ni! If you don't mind ecchi or harem, this is a good anime (yes, there is a lot of gore in this anime btw) :3

There is one good horror anime that rises above all others when it comes to fright and sadism, tho: Boku no Pico.

Corpse party, and Another are good horror anime. And with you've watched higurashi you should watch when the seagulls cry, I don't know the Japanese name its similar to higuradhi

Tokyo Ghoul yes! It's rated #1 in Horror Manga on Amazon, that's why I read it (and watched it too). I must say it's pretty darn close to having you crap your pants but still it's beautifully done!
