(2013 Television Anime Series, based off of the earlier ONA by Izumi Todo and Toei Animation / Banpresto)

Hidden within Kyoto is the "mirror capital" where youkai and humans live together and no one ever dies. It is protected by three people - Kurama, Yase, and Myoue - as they await the return of their parents, Myoue Jonin and Koto. One day a young girl named Koto (same name, different spelling) and her little brothers A and Un wander into the city from a different dimension looking for her mother. A mecha-geek with red eyes, it's not immediately clear whether she's human or youkai. Her arrival upsets the long peace that had ruled the city. (Source: ANN)

It's like Mamoru Hosoda and Gainax had a baby.

This show is the tits.

I love this show. The opening had me grabbed at the very beginning. This wild exciting, but at time emotional is one of the best anime this season.

I know right? Episode 4 was amazing, it really shows how the details of the world were made to enhance the narrative.

It kind of blows my mind that more people aren't talking about it.

"It's like Mamoru Hosoda and Gainax had a baby."
That is the best possible way to describe this. Props, OP.

I'm enjoying it so far, 3 episodes in. One of the more interesting shows this season for sure.

I had a feeling you'd be into it Yata. I think it's brilliant so far. It feels really fresh and original, and they present such f*cking beautiful concepts as it goes along.

Also dat ending theme.

Yeah, bro. I had seen portions of the original a while back and I remember it being the wackiest shit ever, so I was pleasantly surprised at the slower pace of this version; it's easier to follow and just as intriguing. Agreed that the ED is definitely one of better music themes from this season too.

Speaking of which, you watching anything else from this season?

Samurai Flamenco (that ED is catchy as f*ck), Kill la Kill, and what's left of Monogatari and Space Brothers. Have like 5 others that I'm interested in getting to eventually like Beyond the Boundary and Log Horizon, but not really that stressed to get into them immediately, you know?

What about you? Did you ever check out From the New World or Flowers of Evil? Those two were really great I thought, despite some presentation issues in both those stories were brilliant.

I've been meaning to get to Samurai Flamenco and Log Horizon soon, and I'm saving Kill la Kill til it goes a little farther so that I can marathon it. It just seems like one of those shows. I've also been watching Monogatari and Space Bros, along with Beyond the Boundary (tis quite good), Golden Time, Magi season 2, the new Yozakura Quartet, and Gingitsune.

I had watched the first half of From the New World and it never really gripped me. I think I gave up on it right before shit started going down with the plot and I keep telling myself to give it another go but I still haven't.

On the flipside, I did watch Flowers of Evil and I loved it...as much as one could love a show with such a bleak plot. I think the use of atmospherics was beautiful, and I adapted to the rotoscoping really quickly. I was a little confused why it was getting so much hate from the majority of fans, and I think it's cause the anime adaption relied so heavily on suspense, and if you had read the manga beforehand, its impact was severely lessened or outright eliminated. That said, there were a lot of directing calls in the show (such as the aimless walking scenes and the use of repetitive camera angles to symbolize the drudgery of a depressing routine) that I think made it fantastic. I just found it to be a really moody intriguing watch for me, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Yeah I agree completely with Flowers of Evil. I find it a bit odd how satisfied I was with the last episode, but then again it did bring a lot to the table in developing Nakamura like that. I kind of dig that they finished the season on that turning point like they did.

From the New World is a bit more complicated, I think what seems to be the case is that they made a 24 episode series with maybe 18 episodes of content, and extended the actiony episodes unnecessarily to make up for it. HOWEVER, the conclusion is very much worth sticking it out to. In fact I think I'd go so far as to say the whole point of the show is lost without having made it to the end. Ultimately where the story goes sort of gives meaning to certain things that you might initially think is a flaw, but that's also rather dependent on opinion I guess. That being said, Yusuke Kishi has definitely become my favorite japanese author. I haven't read the novel it was based off of, because it hasn't been published in english, but I did read another of his, The Crimson Labyrinth, and it really clear that most of what I like about the anime comes directly from his writing style (including I would guess, the Dvorak New World Symphony tie-in).

I've heard really good things about Golden Time as well, never heard of Yozakura Quartet or Gingitsune though. Worth looking into I presume?

Golden Time is definitely worth watching. Gingitsune is decent, hasn't really impressed me so far but it isn't bad either. It's one of those skippable shows that I started on a whim and doesn't bore me enough to stop watching, but I'm not gonna recommend it. The currently airing series of Yozakura Quartet (Hana no Uta) is...well, I can't really tell if it's a sequel, spinoff, or reboot, but it's nice. The original has more plot, but i's pacing and poor side-character and antagonist development were also huge flaws. If you watch the first one and like it, I'd say give this a go, but this one had a weird start and I don't think it's a good place to start the franchise off on. The pros with the new one are, in my opinion, a more fluid animation standard and art design. Both suffer a bit but also have some personality due to their loose narratives.

Coming full circle here, so far Yozakura's represented a few of the same quirks as Kyousougiga in that regard. Again, up to you if you wanna watch it.

Yeah I'll definitely consider it. I'm really excited for this weeks episode... I never saw the ONA, but judging by the pacing so far as well as the number of episodes they're slated for I feel like pretty much anything might go down. It's really awesome to see a show that is as batshit crazy and fantastical as it is well thought out and rich in character. I feel like that's been lacking a bit recently.

Man I just watched the first 4 eps of this and neither here nor there about it. It's a bit like a dish someone made with all the condiments they could find in the kitchen thrown into it. The flavors are all over the place.

It's fun for the most part I suppose, but I don't really know what to make of it yet.

I guess I can see your point. I feel like most of what they put in there serves a purpose, though. It really all depends on where they're going with it, but from what I've seen I've got a good bit of faith in them.

While I enjoyed the art and atmosphere of the show, I wasn't really gripped by any of the characters yet.

But then episode 5 was a thing, and boy oh boy, this may have had a slow start, but it's all clicking together now. The characters were all there before, and I was starting to grow impatient with how the show was trying harder than necessary to build their development in a really laissez-faire loose narrative, but in the long run I think it worked. There was an added depth to episode 5 that just wasn't present in the other episodes, and it may have been better writing or the end of its extended exposition (or both), but whatever it was, my interest in where this is going just greatly increased.

Calling it now, underrated show of the season. /o/

I was pretty easily suckered in by how well directed it is. I love how they continually give you these little clues, like the meaning of A and Un and Koto's key chain in ep 4. But man, the direction is killer. They take the key sequences of every episode and just consistently knock that shit out of the park, examples being the dream sequence / ending of ep 1, the nighttime sequence from ep 2, Yase's storage system, that freaking wheat field... It's all extremely captivating. I have high hopes for this director in the future, because god damn this is one hell of a debut.

>>16 Have you seen Mawaru Penguindrum? I have a feeling you'd enjoy it.

It clicked in my head after ep 5 that these two shows are a lot alike. That pomegranate scene in particular gave me some vivid flashbacks....

I have not, but I'll definitely give it a shot. Seems like an interesting premise.

I'm going to be intensely following this new director's career, because god DAMN that was brilliant.

I noticed an easter egg in the OP the other day too. Just a few frames after the chorus starts, it shows some shots with glass cracking, the most noticeable of which shows Yase crying. As the show goes on, the shattering gets larger, from barely any cracks at all (the first ep...maybe the 2nd, I forget when the OP is first shown) to nearly covering the whole screen (ep9).

Neat lil' touch. I would post pics as proof but I'm on my phone so :P

I'm sure there are so many more subtle details like that that no one's picked up on. If anyone sees more, I'd love to hear about 'em here. /o/

That's tight, never picked up on that, but I've always dug how well the op represents the narrative.

Just found images of the blu ray packaging in japan oh god they're so pretty and so fucking expensive and don't have subtitles fuuuuck

If this show doesn't get some form of subtitled DVD release I'm gonna be right pissed.
