A Hunter is one who travels the world doing all sorts of dangerous tasks. From capturing criminals to searching deep within uncharted lands for any lost treasures. Gon is a young boy whose father disappeared long ago, being a Hunter. He believes if he could also follow his father's path, he could one day reunite with him.
After becoming 12, Gon leaves his home and takes on the task of entering the Hunter exam, notorious for its low success rate and high probability of death to become an official Hunter. He befriends the revenge-driven Kurapica, the doctor-to-be Leorio and the rebellious ex-assassin Killua in the exam, with their friendship prevailing throughout the many trials and threats they come upon taking on the dangerous career of a Hunter.

THIS, is in my opinion, one of the best anime of all time. Hunter x Hunter is your typical Shounen, Action, Adventure anime with the usual plot-devices but with a pretty unique concept of “hunting”. This series may not adrenaline filled action sequences but it is still highly enjoyable, with plenty of tension.
HxH start of about skilled individuals trying to become professional hunters for their own individual reasons. The story follows a young boy (Gon Freaks) on his quest to become hunter, in order to find his hunter dad. The beginning is just about candidates undergoing treacherous tasks and challenges, whilst forming bonds during the long hunter exam. Some, including me, may be bored by the lackluster beginning but sometime into the hunter exam arc the series picks up and become very interesting and captivating to watch. The following arcs manage to up the level, bringing so much to the unique story but it’s a shame that it never finishes within the TV series. Thankfully, a remake is currently airing, and from what I've seen, it seems like they are pulling a 'Dragonball Z Kai', in the sense that they are cutting all the unnecessary filler, and sticking to the important plot points. So far its excellent, I just hope that it goes even further than the original did. I would love that so much. In any case, give this anime a shot, its old school but has some of the best fight scenes I've ever seen. If you don't like the old school animation, you could always watch the remake, its up to episode 11 now. Give it a go!

Haha, there we go... Sorry for the 'wall of text' but the first time i posted it, my entire review was cut off by the 'view entire thread'... So yeah... :P

I was actually searching for a Hunter x Hunter thread so I could discuss the 'Nen' power system used in the series (which the remake won't be getting to for another arc or two).

To give a condensed summary (hey, for Nen this is condensed), 'Nen' (translating to 'Mind Force') is basically the power to turn your emotions, or 'Aura', into physical energy. There are four ways to use Nen: Ten ('Envelop', used for defence), Zetsu ('Cancel', used for stealth), Ren ('Refine', used for basic offence) and Hatsu ('Release', used for specific skills).

Hatsu's easily the most interesting, as it can be further broken down into six types:

* Enhancement/Kyoukakei - Used to empower existing physical skills and limits.
* Emission/Houshutsukei - Used for projecting your Aura further out from you.
* Manipulation/Sousakei - Used for controlling existing objects.
* Transmutation/Henkakei - Used for changing your Aura type to mimic the elements.
* Conjuration/Gugenkakei - Used for creating objects.
* Specialisation/Tokushitsukei - Anything that doesn't fall into one of the above types.

Nen users tend to have one Nen type they're better at than the others, as Nen is based on its user's personality. Though these aren't absolute, here are the basic Nen personality types:

* Enhancers - Simple yet determined.
* Emitters - Impatient, 'all-work-and-no-play'.
* Manipulators - Logical, tend not to let their emotions get in the way.
* Transmuters - Playful yet deceptive, whimsical liars.
* Conjurors - Sensitive, imaginative and high-strung.
* Specialists - Charismatic and independent.

Being based on your emotions, Nen abilities become more powerful if you place a certain limit or 'Contract' on how you use them, and then even more powerful if you add a punishment if you break this Contract. If a Nen ability also has roots in your personality or history, it gets even more powerful.

So why all this talk about Nen? Because I acrtually wanted to discuss what Nen types characters in other works of fiction would have. For an example, let's try Baccano! and Durarara!! (this is just howI see them, feel free to correct me):

* Enhancers - Simon, Dotachin (maybe Manipulator), Isaac & Miria, Ladd.
* Emitters - Shizuo, Togusa (maybe Conjuror), Saika, Dallas.
* Manipulators - Anri, Luck, Maiza.
* Transmutors - Izaya (maybe Specialist), Shinra, Erika & Walker, Saki, Firo (?), Czeslaw.
* Conjurors - Celty, Kida, Eve, Nice, Graham.
* Specialists - Mikado (though people would first think of him as an Enhancer), Claire, Huey.

(I could easily see Izaya learning Nen to get the upper hand on Shizuo and the Shizuo learning Nen to get even, as well as Ladd hating Specialists for being so high-and-mighty)

HI, this is not to hate the anime or anything. I actually love the anime (old version), just not the remake especially at the very first episode. It just don't make sense and no explanation or course it makes sense to us who seen the original, but mot to others (maybe). I will say this though I love how clear and crisp the animation is now which somewhat, weird at first. I also don't like some of the changes they made. and that's it. I kind of ramble a lot when it comes to this since this is one of my childhood anime. :3 again this is not hating on the anime.

I love this anime and so does my friend maybe I'll tell her to join.

One of my favorite anime, but i love the old one (mostly because I grew up with it) but I am still kept up with the new episodes due too the excitement of this show.

Ok so it's not just me who think that :3 lol kurapika, killua, and . . . the pink hair girl gourmet cook hunter were some of my favorite character and the bug girl :3

The 1999 one is one of the greatest animes I've ever seen. I don't really like the new one though, it's too fast paced and lacks the charm the old one had. The soundtrack isn't as good as the previous version either, missing key musics like Ohayou that really fit HxH.

Well, this remake is getting an end too, just like the old one. I guess we'll see another remake in ten years if Togashi is not dead. It was still a good shonen, but not as holy as HxH1999 is for me.

On a friends recommendation, I'm going to watch the first season (what I'm assuming is the first 26 episodes) of the remake instead of starting with the '99 version. I'm really not sure that I'll like this one, but I guess we'll see.
