I honestly can't believe there isn't a thread for this...owell. Its been a while everyone, Here goes.

In the year 2015, the Angels, huge, tremendously powerful, alien war machines, appear in Tokyo for the second time. The only hope for Mankind's survival lies in the Evangelion, a humanoid fighting machine developed by NERV, a special United Nations agency. Capable of withstanding anything the Angels can dish out, the Evangelion's one drawback lies in the limited number of people able to pilot them. Only a handful of teenagers, all born fourteen years ago, nine months after the Angels first appeared, are able to interface with the Evangelion. One such teenager is Shinji Ikari, whose father heads the NERV team that developed and maintains the Evangelion. Thrust into a maelstrom of battle and events that he does not understand, Shinji is forced to plumb the depths of his own inner resources for the courage and strength to not only fight, but to survive, or risk losing everything.

The End of Evangelion

NERV is being attacked by SEELE and Rei becomes one with Lillith. Together with the Spear of Longinus and the completed EVA-series, Shinji will decide whether or not mankind will cease to exist. He has to decide now if he wants to stay alive or be dead, but his decision will affect all of humanity.

Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone

After the second impact, all that remains of Japan is Tokyo-3, a city that's being attacked by giant creatures that seek to eradicate the human kind, called Angels. After not seeing his father for more than eight years, Shinji Ikari receives a phone call in which he is told to urgently come to the NERV Headquarters, an organization that deals with the destruction of the Angels through the use of giant mechs called Evas. Shinji's objective is to pilot the Eva Unit 01 while teaming up with the Eva Unit 00 pilot, Ayanami Rei.

Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance

In the earliest battles against the monstrous Angels, young Eva pilots Shinji and Rei were forced to carry humanity’s hopes on their shoulders. Now, with the deadly onslaught of the Angels escalating and the apocalyptic Third Impact looming, Shinji and Rei find their burden shared by two new Eva pilots, the fiery Asuka and the mysterious Mari. Maneuvering their enormous Eva machines into combat, the four young souls fight desperately to save mankind from the heavens — but will they be able to save themselves?

ALRIGHT, The basic, initial, plot goes thus: a 14-year-old boy named Shinji is called to NERV (an organization charged with defending mankind from extinction, no less) by his estranged, seemingly cold and calculating father. There, his fathers' first words are an order to pilot an immense robotic machine, the titular Evangelion, and fight against the monster that's attacking Tokyo-3, the city under which NERV has it's headquarters. These illusory 'monsters' are called Angels and are seemingly invincible - traditional weaponry, even in the year 2015, has minimal effect upon them. Only the Eva 'biomechs', which can be piloted solely by certain selected 14-year-olds can stop them. This is merely the basic, initial premise of the series. As it goes on, everything gets a lot more complicated; There's a metric ton of mystery, suspense, twists and turns in Evangelion's plot, all routinely thought-provoking and intensely interesting. The characters are excellent. This is an important point as the series is more about them than about the Angels or NERV. Shinji Ikari is one the most believable and genuinely sympathetic character ever conceived in anime. Though some would complain that Shinji is overtly emotional and annoyingly so. But, really, no one wants Shinji to become the 'Hollywood hero' and save the day with a smile on his face - no such human could ever really exist, and studio Gainax understand this and apply it perfectly to the series. Shinji's mental struggle is dealt with effectively by Hideki Anno, through the use of complex monologues and largely successful experimental cinematic techniques. Asuka and Rei, the other chosen children, are both polar opposites and ingenious characters. Both develop a great deal in a very interesting way throughout the series, and this character exploration and growth is at the heart of Evangelion. The design aspects are wonderfully unique - the Evas themselves are strikingly colourful and the Angels are attention grabbing and memorable with many towering over Tokyo-3's skyscraper. The Angels appear in many different forms (one Angel takes the form of a gargantuan, blue diamond while another is too small to be seen with the naked eye and acts as an organic virus, crippling NERV's computer system) which helps Eva avoid the repetitve "Monster of the Week" format and keeps the action aspect of the series consistently fresh and enjoyable. Judeo-Christian references are famous (or rather, infamous) in Evangelion and despite widespread condemnation, I am of the firm belief that the symbolism is never obnoxious, and always evocative and visually shocking. It must be noted these references are usually fairly shallow, but they make you sit up and take notice of the deeper meaning in the series as a whole. Animation is crisp and clear for the platinum re-mastering that I watched, and I hasten to add that this re-mastering is only version of Eva worth buying. Visuals are regularly stunning and scenes from this series will surely stay with you forever. The regular provocative imagery is often times shocking and sometimes awe-inspiring. The image of a crippled Rei, bleeding and covered in bandages in the first episode provides the first real shock of the series. Such imagery contrasts with the visual gags present throughout - a toothpick container obscuring Shinji's nether regions in episode 2 being one of the most memorable....

Okay, this thread is a lot longer than it looks. I put a review for the series, The End of Evangelion, and the 2 movies that are out already. Then I wrote a review about the series itself. How's that for a quality thread Irk?

I can't believe there wasn't a thread for Evangelion. As always, nice review, Mael.

This has to be one of my top 5 anime. I enjoyed the battles and was a little confused with that end (the original of the TV series) when I was a kid. Then a cople of years later, I watched it again and whoa. A lot of things that I didn't noticed at first. tl;dr Fucking awesome.
Let's see how long till the board become filled again with shitty threads like "I love this anime" + a pic

This series.

I can't really describe how much I love it. The majority of that love most likely stems from nostalgia, remembering that I watched it during the relatively introspective and philosophical teen years - It just blew me away.

I haven't rewatched it lately however. I do however, find a massive wealth of quality fanfictions that do marvelous things exploring the concepts and possibilities of this series, and that's what has mainly kepy my love for this series so healthy over the years.

Even if you don't enjoy the show itself, I suggest watching it just to get a grounding in the fan created material. It helps you to understand what's going on, and then see the amazing possibilities the show holds for damn near any thing. It's definitely an investment in time that I would make again if given the choice - As it's kept me a follower of it's storyline and characters for well over nine years.

Also... Asuka and Rei are the first characters I ever had problems figuring out who my OTP was.

this series and i have a love hate relationship. on one hand, it has great art, an awesome story idea, and makes some points i agreed with. However, my problem lies with three things: the ending(i'll try to keep things spoiler free), shinji, and the end of eva movie.

towards the end, the show introduces many questions that never get answered, and the ending came out of nowhere. Also, the frequent cutaways to talk about philosophy, even though what they said made sense, just seem random and out of place. Show, don't tell. basic rule of story telling.

As for the EoE movie, while it did clear up a few questions, other questions arose in their place. Also there were points in the film that were just giant wtf moments.

My complaints about shinji aren't the standard "quit being a whiny bitch and pilot the robot"(well, not entirely). The evas aren't like most mechas, and the pilots fell pain when their evas take damage. you can't blame him for not wanting to pilot something so dangerous. however, sometimes, he doesn't know when to get mad or stand up for himself. A noteable example of this is after the unit 03 incident, where shinji locks himself in his eva and whines to his dad. he doesn't seem angry like they tried to portray, and insted comes off as just an imo bitch.

fortunately, the 1.0 and 2.0 movies make up for many of the shows faults, and i have no complaints about them. it's like the anime and the 1st movie were rough drafts, and the rebuild(1.0, 2.0, and soon 3.0) movies are the polished final draft. Hope the third movie ends things well.

>>9 Did you read what everyone said already in this thread? I've stated my opinion on it. I loved the anime for the way it combined the mecha aspect with religion and threw philosophy in there, just so nothing would make sense. But it's not just the series. The movies following the series are fucking amazing.

In my opinion, Neon Genesis Evangelion is the best anime made thus far. However, explaining my reasoning would be tedious, for it has already been stated by everyone who has given their reasons.

14 Name: mechfanboy : 2011-12-05 19:44 ID:4bVZYH3n [Del]

Part of the reason that the original series and EoE are so screwed up is because the creator, Hideaki Anno, was depressed and in therapy.

As for the ending of the anime, another reason is that they just didn't have the budget. I loved it, though. Does anybody have a concrete date on when 3.0'll be out?

So I have a theory about the original series, the movie and the rebuilds. Shinji has a choice to destroy everything or not. He chooses not to destroy everything; the world is remade and that remade world is the one from the rebuilds (note the seas are now all red instead of blue as in the original series). This is also why things a little different. The rebuild is actually a continuation of the EVA series.

>>23: I ask because there's a WMG about Shinji pushing some kind of Reset Button to try and get a better ending for the series, but without the advantage of his memories.

Also, to what scene are you referring? The only time Shinji was on a beach (IIRC) was at the end of The End of Evangelion, and at that point he was trying to strangle Asuka/break her neck, not screw her.

Or did I get the context of your statement wrong?

Honestly? One of my all time favorite animes. Last year I shelled out the cash to buy 1.11 and 2.22 on Blu-Ray and hooollyyy crap. ;-; They were absolutely breathtaking. The ending to 2.0 and the redone scene with Unit-03 had my jaw dropped. I cannot wait until 3.0 and 4.0 come out, I'll be sure to buy them.

I was lucky enough, in September, to go to a shop that sells used DVDs, games, CDs, and the like and they had a NGE boxset. It was no frills, the only extras were director's cut episodes on the last DVD but I still shelled the cash for it, too. So worht all the money I spent on the series. I even have a high quality figurine of Unit-01. :D

I watched Evangelion and quite frankly, I didn't like it. While the story was amazing, the characters themselves ruined it for me (except Rei). Shinji was a whiny little bitch throughout the whole show and it really made me not want to watch it. To me, characters and story are the things that make up a good anime and if one of those are bad, then it makes me not want to watch it.

Just found a camrip of Eva 3.0. It's about fifteen minutes long and cuts between various scenes. It is also unsubtitiled and a little bit on the "shakey-cam" side of the spectrum, but the overall quality is fairly good. The scenes in question don't contain any spoilers (unless you consider little non-plot related details to be spoilers), so I would recommend watching it (especially for the last clip). Enjoy!

seems you all forgetting neon genesis evangelion: death and rebirth. it gives a great recap of the entire series (death) and since the creator went...yeah.... they made an episode that took place right before EoE (rebirth). it had a disk with two sides alpha (movie only) and omega, (mokuji interactive movie which has content you can select to give more background on who is currently on screen/what is being said.) plus the paper that usually had a contents rap up that, when unfolded, was a movie poster. it was made befor EoE and, as a result, has a trailer for EoE. All that being said, im about to get an authentic, fully posable, metallic, eva unit 01 figurine. i love this anime so much for reasons previously stated and the life or death situation with koworu.

>>50 Go dig a grave and shoot yourself in it, bleed, then die.

This series is fucking intense! I watch it over and over again because it's that good, and the movies are great as well. As for the characters they have colorful back round and are easily likeable with the acceptation of our hero; Shinji. Shinji is a 14 year old cry baby bitch and I was seriously pissed that he didn't man-the-fuck-up during the end of the series.
There was a Dojinshi made covering an alternate ending to this series called "KIMIGABUCHI, RE-TAKE" downloadable from www.hentairules.net I believe. Now I know what your thinking but is not an obscure hentai manga; it has one or two sex scenes and the rest is a damn good fucking story. I highly recomend reading it.

52 Name: bang-bang : 2013-01-12 12:02 ID:DSq3mTHL [Del]

I like it that all the characters' mental issues are acceptable except for Shinji's because they don't allow him to "man the fuck up" and be the hero, when that's exactly the point. Wasn't Shinji made with the intention to be everything a typical mecha protagonist is not? Because as a whole NGE meant to pick apart and go against all the typical aspects of the mecha genre.

In the new movies (well not 3.0 since I haven't seen it) it almost seems like Shinji is becoming an actual hero which is weird for me considering I thought the point of him was to be the antithesis of one. But I'm just a casual viewer so I don't really feel strongly about it either way.

>>54 Why is that every Evangelion haters reason for hating? I do understand that it can get a bit annoying at times, but in the end, I highly doubt that Hideaki Anno intended for Shinji to be a very likable character, anyway. This isn't a straight good vs evil story, and Shinji's damaged psyche is central to the plot.

As the series progresses he is asked important existential questions, and, most of the time, he cannot answer. Then towards the end, the fate of the world is thrust upon his shoulders, and he must ask himself the same questions, where the answers he comes up with decide whether or not he can, must, or will save it. If Shinji just "manned up" then all of this intrigue would just die, and all we would've ended up with would be a load of thoughtless, generic mecha fight scenes. Which, I'm sure, many brain-dead morons like the guy above me would've eaten up with relish.

Bump.

One of the great things about this series is that it never gets boring - I've seen the series about 5 or 6 times and always, something still manages to surprise me. And I finally watched the first Rebuild movie after putting it off for 3 years. Fuck, it was good.

Anyway, my Eva DVD collection is almost complete. After spending so incredibly long searching for an R4 DVD of The End of Evangelion, I got my hands on one, and surprisingly cheap at $40.

Too bad I bought it as part of a deal with my parentd that I couldn't have it until I'd completed a total of 100 hours of homework. No matter what my results are like at the end of this year, they can't say I didn't try.

So there's its spot, right next to the director's cut DVD of episodes 24 - 26. I swear, soon as I get it I'm marathoning this whole fucking series.

Kind of a late watcher of this... But I had to time over the spring break and decided to watch Evangelion.
The ship Kawoshin was going around a lot, and I started shipping it before even watching the anime so I got really impatient XD
Finished the anime series, the alternate ending, and all three movies..... They were pretty good.
And Kaworu...... TT_TT But I have a theory that Shinji will keep running into Kaworu due to the fact that he also has clones just like Rei.

I would totally recommend this anime though. Great plot twist and interesting story. And Kawoshin shall carry on (I'm a shipper as you can see :P).

I just started this series with my friends yesterday. I've been interested in it for a little while but I was always waiting for it to come to Netflix or Hulu or something so it kept getting pushed off. Then I just decided to watch it on sites on my phone.

So far I really really like it. I'm only like 6 episodes in so far I think. I hear Shinji is hated by a lot of people but so far I'm alright with him.

>>73 You can switch it to English at the top right and check out the "About Us". It's a project by Anno's company and another one to showcase a number of animation shorts. I haven't watched them all but I think only #7 is also Evangelion related. But #11 was really cool and #3 too (a cautionary tale about how anime girls will steal your sole probably).

(about Evangelion: Another Impact) I thought that was an actual live-action Evangelion movie when I first saw it. I'm genuinely sad they aren't going to make a more fully-developed film than that, but it's still really really cool.

Is this the greatest animated series ever created? Yes, yes it is.

Recently finished a rewatch of the original series after rewatching the Rebuild series over and over for months. My second run through Nean genesis Eva was far more enjoyable than the first and I gained a far deeper understanding of the series as a whole from doing so.

Does anyone have an idea as to when the final installment to the Rebuild series will be released? 3.0 has ruined my life with its ending

Also, happy 'year of Evangelion' to you all. I can easily say that I'd rather the 2015 that Nerv and the Angels existed in than our current worlds condition

I hated the series, seriously, it was badly paced and the characters were unlikable, not to speak of the story that didn't explain the origin of anything nor have an end.
I am ready to give it another chance though. Here's my question: Despite disliking the show, could I like the movies?

86 Name: cao : 2016-01-05 08:59 ID:XbkGwiGp [Del]

i finished nge in 3 days and watched 14 episodes in one day. it was the only series that kept me occupied for 6 hours continuously-- i related to shinji a lot (and all of the main characters tbh?? thats sad) i liked it, even though there were some problems i guess (mainly the only thing i didn't like was the art style- it has the case of the 90s uglies hah)
i think it was worth watching in 2015 as the story took place in 2015, but i don't think i would watch it otherwise because its not really my type of genre- but in the end i thought it was good.
the ending fucked me up though (laughs)

Ah, loved this anime so much. The psychological aspect of it blows my mind every time I watch the EOE and the last episode of the anime. Funny how what was said to be really abstract and creative in the last episode was actually just because the studio was extremely low on budget at that time so they couldn't animate shit for the finale. I could care less about the sci-fi side to it. Looking at it as a mecha anime will only rape you against the wall.

But in all seriousness, Shinji's initial purpose is to simply just pilot Eva Unit-01. Since his mother's soul is inside and powering it as well, it makes him the most compatible pilot out of all candidates.

His ultimate purpose in the End and in the Rebuild is to bring about the destruction of the world while SEELE's intentions throughout the entire series was to instigate the Human Instrumentality Project which is the forced evolution of humanity into a single united entity.

Shinji inside Eva 01 basically becomes a god who decides the fate of humanity and reality after the start of the Third Impact.

There is a popular and pretty valid theory that during the Rebuild series of movies, Shinji ultimately chose to reset the world though there are various traces of the Third Impact's affliction on the planet (i.e. the blood-stained oceans) and the fact that Shinji himself almost completes the Fourth Impact in Rebuild 2.0.

Thank you for the clarification. It's been a while since I've seen both 2.22 and 3.33. My train of thought probably lingered too much on Third Impact actually happening in The End of Evangelion and misremembering when the rise of the Black Moon happened in the Rebuild movies.

Technically you're correct, sort of. It's hard to tell exactly where the 'reset' begins, but either way it was reset, so in their reality it was still the third impact, even though that had already happened in EoE.

The real meat and potatoes of all of it though is when you think about the whole Adam thing, and tie it back to Kabbalah. Jewish mysticism is pretty fucking cool when you think of it all as just part of Evangelion's mythos.

So, an Evangelion 3.3 You Can (Not) Redo - discussion post.

Ive been reading and thinking over alot of theories about the new installment to the Rebuild series, as Im sure alot of you other Eva fans have. Im sure Im not the only one to have finished watching it, said 'what the actual fuck just happened' to myself and then began watching it again.
Is Anno just trolling us all? Are we going to get an ending like Episode 25/26 of NGE? I mean for starters, the trailer for 3.3 (Shown as Q: (end)) was completely scrapped and we were left with 15 years of in between to fill the gaps - not explained post Third Impact. Personally, I believe that Anno will end Eva the way he wants and WHEN he wants (whenever thje hell that will be) this time with a clearer head.
Something I noticed during a rewatch of the new film was Asuka's core is blue rather than the usual red, could this be an indication of Asuka not being human? A strange theory I guess but where dd the eye patch come from? What is the glow behind it? and why does she refer to humans as Lillin, self alienating herself as if she wree different? In the Rebuild series she pilots the new unit that goes bezerk due to an angel attack that fuzes with the new unit....is Asuka an angel???
Kaworu, SEELE's boy, is far more admirable and likeable in the Rebuild series. His role he plays, and Nerv this time not being a slave to SEELE, he knows that he is being used and helps bitch Shinji to regain the slim bit of self confidence he has (only to be CRUSHED again).
Gendo, King of the Lillin (confusing title), is far darker and more evil(?) in the film and even Fuyustki seems scared of him, as he warns Shinji about him. Just what the hell has he be doing, what the hell is his goal. The end of the movie leaves us room to assume that everything is still within his control and predictions...but what is he plotting??? Where is everyone as Nerv, how the hell did he build that giant frickin robot with just him and Fuyustki??? Who knows...
Kaji - where the fuck is he?
Rei...will we ever see the Rei we grew to love in EoE or 2.0? The new Rei clone seems to be slowly gaining human qualities but it would be too cliche of Anno to have her 'regain' these memories - I hope the Rei we know is still alive (being held somewhere idk)
It would be nice to see a flashback or have a full explination in the final installment episode of the Rebuild series although I personally believe Anno wont do this, leaving us to forever guess what the hell happened during third impacts end.
With the fourth installment on the way (hahahahaha), there is alot of need to be excited as an Eva fan - lots of myseterys remain unsolved and finally we will (hopefully) have some clarity about the series' re-issues.

I was a bit upset they changed Mari's voice actor, but just like 2.0, 3,0/4.0's art and graphics suprised me. I especially liked the beginning of 3.0 when Auska has her helmet and is fighting mid-air ascent.
